More than 552 GW of utility-scale solar and wind projects have been announced, or are already under development, across the Mediterranean.

    Powerhouse strongly implies that the Mediterranean would become a net exporter of renewable energy. Instead this level of investment is just a step on the way to decarbonise the power supply of the region.

    Reducing carbon emissions is one major driver of renewable energy imo, and a second is decentralization of energy consumption. We don’t need ‘powerhouses’ that sell energy to others. We just need to make sure that the production of solar cells and other tech isn’t carbon intensive because it relies on fossil fuels such as in China.
