  • Steam still needs more competition IMO. If Steam were to disappear tomorrow, the gap left in the PC gaming market would be massive.

  • The best way to touch Nintendo products is with a soldering iron - to install a modchip.

  • In 2006 they bundled Wii Sports with the Wii, which seemed to benefit them considering the Wii's success. Though, the Switch 1 had a the demo "1, 2, Switch" for 60 USD and sold better than the Wii, though culturally, more people probably know about Wii Sports compared to 1, 2, Switch.

  • It was the eyes that gave it away for me. They look, just, wrong.

  • I bough Farcry 5 for around $10 CAD a few years back and that's about how much value I got put of it.

  • Intel is almost flawless, I say as someone who uses an Intel A750. It does have a bug where putting load on the GPU causes a dramatic increase in latency for GPU compute tasks, but that's mostly only important for VR. Flatscreen games work great.

  • I would recommend against the pinephone. While the hardware is well supported, the hardware sucks. Voyager in Firefox runs at around 4 fps, while the battery percent drops every minute and the back of the phone is uncomfortably hot.

You would be better off with a Pixel 3a, oneplus 6 or poco f1, which are all supported by PostmarketOS. While many hardware features don't work on these phones, they all have rudimentary camera support and have actually good SOCs that perform well.

  • Sodium is client side, so it will not help with server performance. Something like Paper can improve server performance.

  • Do use use the mod called Sodium? Vanilla Minecraft Java has bad performance issues that are fixed with Sodium. I've tried Vanilla minecraft side by side with minecraft + shaders and sodium, and even with the shaders, sodium made it smoother.

  • I mean, it's blahaj.zone, what else were you going to do? Not upvote?

  • lvra.gitlab.io is a great source of info for vr on linux. The discord server you mentioned is also bridged to Matrix for those who don't want to use discord.

  • IIRC robot vacuums usually use a single Time of Flight (ToF) sensor that rotates, giving the robot a 2d scan of it's surroundings. This is sufficient for a vacuum which only needs to operate on a flat surface, but self driving vehicles need a better understanding of their surroundings than just a thin slice.

That's why cars might use over 30 distinct ToF sensors, each at a different vertical angle, that are then all placed in the rotating module, giving the system a full 3d scan of it's surroundings. I would assume those modules are much more expensive, though still insignificant compared to the cost of a car sold on the idea of self driving.

  • Malware. All the malware 🪲. That thing better be airgapped.

  • They should have renamed instead, something like the "Carbon Rebate". It's more descriptive anyways. "Axe the Rebate" does not feel the same.

  • Wait, do normie phone, just, instantly open an untrusted website? The camera on LineageOS has a "scan" mode where it shows the data of scanned QR codes before you make an action.

  • It irks me how little people in my area are actually critical of our car dependence. Even though personal vehicles create significant pollution, it would still be worth just for the health and quality of life benefits alone.

  • I have 1 time where my alarm goes off, but I use 2 physical alarm clocks: My phone and an old 90s digital alarm clock. The phone is mostly just as a backup in case of a power outage or something.

  • IIRC e-bikes are limited to 32 km/h in Canada, and are programmed to stop pedal assist beyond that speed.

The real solution is to not mix people walking with people biking on the few, narrow paths that Ottawa does have, the same way you don't want to mix people biking with cars. I think a widening of the River Pathway would be enjoyed by basically everyone, for example.

Also, the roads that run parallel to some of these mixed use pathways would suck to bike on, even with a physically separated lane since these roads have drivers doing 70-90 km/h
