  • Pests and diseases are another thing to be careful of. I've ended up with a pretty bad spider mite infestation after replanting some grocery store lettuce. Like any new houseplant, consider keeping it isolated for a while!

  • If you're comfortable on the command line, exiftool is pretty flexible and can likely do what you want

  • This is great, and it doesn't have to be as complicated to get started. Here's my setup -

    • navidrome running in docker on my server (a NUC in the basement, with a copy of the library)
    • tailscale to access the server from outside my home network (I run headscale, a self-hosted coordination server on a VPS, but the free company hosted default would be fine)
    • Ultrasonic on my phone (I like the ability to "pin" songs or albums to keep offline)
    • local copy of the library on my desktop which I listen to with Quod Libet

I cancelled my Spotify membership back in April and have been buying on average an album a month, either Bandcamp or directly from artists if possible. Bandcamp is also decent for discovering new artists, and I've also gone old-school and sought out music critic websites that cover the genres I like.

  • This is cool, and what great timing - I just spent the last half hour sewing up the seam inside the ear cups of my QC35s. The fake leather is flaking as well so I'll definitely try something like this in the future, probably with fabric (maybe a 4-way stretch cotton knit, athletic fabric probably a good choice)

I was also thinking about crocheting a cover for the top band.

  • Currently enjoying a salad of overwintered kale and cabbage, beet greens from thinning the sprouts, a couple radishes, and snap peas, with sunflower seeds and fresh dill sprinkled on top. I just added grocery store cucumber and bell pepper, because I was behind on planting those. This is what we do it for!

  • Sounds like the zipper is too long - a friend was just telling me about this pitfall since I'm planning to make a pair of pants soon.

I don't have any first-hand experience, but this YouTube channel has some great videos about tailoring jeans. Not exactly your problem, but might at least help you understand the construction - https://youtu.be/AiYmCpDKmqk

This may also help - https://youtu.be/RBN10DxjW14

  • I use Ultrasonic with my Navidrome server and it's fine, but I really wish I could find a player that would replicate the old itunes style Genre -> Artist -> Album selection flow. The Genre tab in most players just gives you a list of songs, which is not helpful for large libraries.

  • I was just reading your post on solarpunk games - thanks!

  • I just completed my first substantial sewing project, using a pattern from this site! My hems aren't the most even and the neckline was really tricky but I'm pretty happy with it. This is the Sven sweatshirt design, and I used a somewhat heavy knit cotton/polyester fabric. It fits great (as you'd hope!) and will probably become my new winter pajama shirt.

The site is great to use - there are good pictures for how to take each of the measurements you need, and I liked the ability to manually optimize the part layout to minimize the amount of paper it used. I saw a tip on YouTube to piece the pattern together by taping it to a large window or glass door so you can see the overlap between the sheets, and that worked great for me.

My next goal is to do a Simon shirt in flannel - decent step up in complexity so I might do a few other simpler projects first.

  • FB marketplace may be where I end up - I've seen big fluid totes on there when I've looked in the past.

  • I'm curious where you got your rain water containers - I'd like to get something around that size this year.

  • I use these at night if my feet get too cold, but this was a great reminder I can use them at other times too! Turned down my heat but am very cozy with a blanket and a hot water bottle.

Also, making covers for them was a great beginner crochet project.

    What's growing on, Beehaw?

  • Only just seeing this now - thanks for the response! Your blog is one of my favorites.

The permacomputing site looks awesome, I know what I'm reading tonight

  • I've been following you for a while on the mainstream socials, super cool to see you here! I love everything you've got going on! Good luck with the irrigation system, I'd love to do something similar in the future, and Home Assistant + ESPHome is certainly what I would use to control it.

  • I use an old phone that doesn't hold a charge as an always-on Home Assistant kiosk. Even if you don't run Home Assistant, there might be some other sort of dashboard-like thing that could be useful to have always visible.

  • If youve got the space, it can be as simple as just piling them up and leaving them for a few years. My mom does this, they take about three years to break down into usable compost. They'll go faster if chopped up by running the lawn mower over them before raking, or using a reverse leaf blower that shreds them.

There's also definitely no need to buy a fancy compost bin - you'd do just fine with a garbage can with the bottom sawn off to let the worms in. My municipality also had bins for sale for like $25 that have worked well for me.
