  • I don't know how it went down, but I'm pretty sure they didn't have to give the Sheriff anything. He'd have time to go over the subpoena with a lawyer the same as if it was just mailed. It doesn't sound like there was any warrant for the Sheriff to perform a search or do anything other than drop off the papers.

  • What does any of this have to do with the government forcing backdoors into otherwise encrypted chats? The point is that nobody but the recipient should be able to read it, not even governments.

  • There's plenty of seedbox companies out there, you can get 10Gbps+ connections and they run the torrent client for you so there's no upload happening from your local PC at all.. Many offer VPN capabilities at the same time, but for general browsing I use a VPS with my own wireguard.

  • the CEO of Kurzgesagt word that they would not have made the videos if they hadn’t been paid to

This on its own proves nothing bad. Some videos just require a bigger budget to make and can't be made on their otherwise limited budget. Or the topic is just lower priority due to writer interests. If they were forced into covering specific topics then that's a different story, but I haven't seen any evidence that was the case.

  • Just what I was hoping to see

  • Cool photo! This reminds me of a leaf picture I took a couple years ago where the sun was coming in at just the right angle to highlight all the details.

  • I've got like 10 of these, they work great, and it's actually been helpful for figuring out where all my power is going. I realized I could save probably $20 a month by shutting down my PC at night, both because of the CPU power and subsequent increase in AC usage.

  • Like most people have a choice...

  • The time switch itself isn't that terrible. But sunset before 5pm can fuck right off.

  • Sounds like a good way to AI-wash any accounting fraud. Now you can just blame it on Microsoft.

  • Maybe it's only possible in certain cases, but I can tell you for certain it's possible with running exe's and loaded dll's. I have a CMake step on Windows that does this rename hack so my builds don't fail if I still have the app running.

  • Windows doesn't even tell you if Explorer itself has a folder open... how the hell does 7-Zip do it?

  • This is honestly one of my favorite features of the linux filesystem. As a dev it makes things like replacing and hot-reloading plugins way easier.

It turns out you can kind of get the same functionality on Windows if you rename the open file and place the new one with the original name, but it's a bit of a hack.

  • A famously useful tool for saving miners from suffocation?

  • Have fun building a login without cookies. I'm sure it's possible, but session cookies are by far the most common and secure mechanism, used basically everywhere including Lemmy

  • My grandparents live on a farm in rural Canada and have never gotten delivery to their door. They have a PO box at the nearest town which is a 30 minute drive away. They can't even get anything shipped by a courier because non will deliver to a PO box or outside of town. As far as I know it's always worked this way, and nothing is changing there.

  • If they didn't give out tax credits then they would receive that amount in taxes. From the government's point of view tax credits are a reduction in revenue.

I don't think 10% fewer tax credits would have made the difference of the factory being built or not. VW has plenty of money to pay taxes.

  • Maybe instead of giving away tax credits, they should use those taxes to improve Canada Post...
