  • I think that's a factor, but I think it's more about Chromes "mind share". Everyone knows Chrome. Not everyone knows Firefox. So, if every user brings two other in to use their browser, Chrome will always be ahead and the rift will grow. And if you're using something nonstandard, you're more likely to switch to what everyone else is using. That what I think it's about. Shame, because Firefox is great.

  • I was about to ask if he did something new, but then I realized that it wouldn't matter. That whole man is a "situation".

  • In that case. It's terrible! I hate it!

  • I realize that now. Well done!

  • XKCD is amazing.

  • I wish you all the best. The way I avoid dealing with this on my own PC is I use separate physical drives. I unplug one, install OS, swap, install the other OS, and just use BIOS to choose which drive to boot from. I find that to be a lot less of a headache.

  • Oh nice! I like Arch because of AUR, but I'm too lazy to go through the setup again, so I'll definitely try this.

  • Is it like Manjaro without the bloat?

  • Not surprising. Tyrants like being friends.

  • Don't be sorry. I was born in Russia, living in the US. You can love your country without supporting the government. You're not responsible for what your government is doing if you don't have any way to stop it. Just speak out when you can.

  • Which makes no material sense, but makes sense when you remember what a monopoly Windows has.

  • Russian Federation is a shadow of the horror that the Soviet Union was. I choose to believe that you simply don't know enough about the facts of life in the USSR.

  • I understand that from a technical level. But the solution is "we'll make it work" and not "either use a less secure tool, or lower security on what you are using". In my opinion this is a problem that Twitch needs to fix, not work around.

  • That wouldn't work long term. If another country comes in and controls the security of Russia, then any issues Russian people have could be easily blamed on the "oppressors". And that would be used to bring back the totalitarian regime that is currently in charge.

I know Japan went through this, but that's a whole different culture. It won't work in Russia because they're always looking for a savior. Lenin "saved" them from the Empire which led to 80 or so years of Communist oppression. Then Gorbachev tried to "save" them from that. Yeltsin "saved" them from the Soviet remains. Putin "saved" them from the post Soviet collapse poverty. Or at least he said he would do it.

I was born in Russia and remember as a little kid going with my grandma to vote for Putin's "White Bear" party. People really thought he would save them from the evil West and all of the things that US were allegedly doing to us.

I hope that in this day and age people are able to overcome the internal propaganda of their countries, but seeing how Putin is planning to cut Russia off from the internet, and understanding how effective language barriers still are, I fear that it will become a North Korea situation. It's so fucking sad.

  • Vietnam comes to mind

  • Wouldn't that still be Twitch's fault for not supporting a browser with added security features? Or am I misunderstanding something?

  • I hope that the impending collapse is enough to dislodge the CCP from their seat of power. China could be such a positive force in the world if it wasn't controlled by maniacs.

  • It's a future I wish for, but I'm not seeing it.

  • But someone has to install it on the laptop and put in on the store shelf. And I'd love to see that happen. It just hasn't yet. Not enough.
