  • And it would still not have any software designed for it that makes it worth the purchase.

  • As someone who has a formal education in Computer Engineering, I can attest that the degree is essentially a combination of modern Electrical Engineering and Computer Science degrees. In other words it is a dual major without any of the benefits.

Not all Software Engineers do actual engineering and that’s okay. The only problems I’ve seen with this in my time in the tech industry is when you have someone who can talk the talk, but when it comes time to do the difficult mental work, they fold like a deck of cards, or worse release a product that’s half-baked. You will see this a lot when a boot camp churns out talent hoping to make a quick buck and then they are given a truly important and hard problem to solve, such as healthcare or military applications.

For that reason, many SWE roles require education to be specified on resumes, rather than certifications as a hoop you have to jump through. If your job did not question your education when you were interviewing then that is usually a good indicator of the kinds of people you will be working with. With all of that said I’ve worked with many engineers that did not have a formal education and were very talented, some of which lied about their education to get where they are today. This happens frequently across all industries however, and isn’t unique to software.

  • I suppose under a certain lens realism can be viewed as depressing. But when you remember we are all stardust, born from explosions, a rare occurrence in and of itself that resulted in our lives, one doesn’t need remembrance to feel special about themselves. That becomes somewhat trivial in the grand scheme of the universe.

In fact it almost seems like a cry for help to want to be remembered, like as if you are so fearful of death that you’d waste the time you were given making others think you’re somehow better than the rest, when the truth is we are all more alike than we are different.

Anywho, that’s just my perspective on things, cheers

  • Material sciences is a difficult field. People spend years researching one small area just to shelve their research as not viable, too cost prohibitive, or impractical for large scale manufacturing.

I haven't seen any research into durable biodegradable materials that could hold the weight of vehicles unfortunately, so I think investment will be hard to come by. Though I don't disagree with the premise that something that can degrade over time, but also not harm the environment would be an ideal solution to the problem. I imagine if such a thing were created it would be able to be applied to many other industries, not just transportation.

  • We need a clever solution to this problem, because our govts are unlikely to solve this through new infrastructure or policy changes.

I’ve been reading about this topic for a while now, and I always thought the tech these guys invented was worth further investment: https://smarttirecompany.com/

  • Let’s workshop one.

The remote controlled Tesla robots killed the UHC CEO during their morning commute, they were in a big hurry because they were late for work, and as they hurried into work that morning they accidentally pushed Jim who was holding a scalding hot cup of coffee. Jim exclaimed, “goddamnit Elon!”, as his coffee went flying across the room. The coffee leaked under the door of a sealed clean room and that shifted 3 atoms to the left in the EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) Lithography System. Ruining the entire wafer. Jim quietly cleaned up the spill, and went on with his day. You might be wondering who the operator of the Robot was, and it was of course, Tom Cruise. He always hated Jim.

  • So they help you write into inputs and click buttons.

Lots of things already do that in the AI space, so nothing new. See literally any AI scraping tool, or the testing dev tool https://midscenejs.com for examples.

I don’t see why this had to be a browser and not an extension. It’s an assistive accessibility tool at the end of the day, should become especially useful for disabled surfers.

  • I am writing this message from a X. Haven’t had a good reason to upgrade, maybe they’ll give me one soon?

  • If you haven’t tried Zed I recommend giving it a try. I was skeptical about it at first, but it’s so much faster than VS Code, and it has a lot of great quality of life features built in.

  • In the context of the sentence I’m guessing it was a typo for MAU, monthly active users.

  • Yes a child, not a grow adult with the ability to make perfect judgement calls, shot in the direction of his attacker. Then continued to shoot as the attacker was fleeing the scene.

Don’t be naive, a grown adult who was in a panic in that circumstance would not be viewed as a psychopath, let alone a child.

  • Can you tell me more about how context isn’t important in this circumstance?

The child told news reporter this after the event occurred. We don’t even know whether or not he laughed like, “heh wow that was scary”. Or maniacally like the Joker.

  • I still think the apple should be the power button. Would’ve been a baller move on their part.

  • As the intruder walked down the stairs, “he told me he was going to kill me, f-you and all that,” Chris said.

The final shot hit the man in the leg as he was hopping the fence, the boy said.

The man was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Context is everything and you don’t have any. I’d be mocking the meth head who tried to kill 11 year old me as well. This kid is a hero.

  • Code is a liability.

You could probably build a tool that assesses the risk of any given PR based on this and several other signals. PRs with enough risk should require justification and sign off.

  • You can still watch those old films, as long as you are paying a subscription to a streaming service…

And they feel like releasing the content you want to watch. And they don’t try to ruin the experience by remastering it. And they don’t try to ruin the experience by upscaling or recreating the film in a different style. And they don’t triple the price of content that used to cost a quarter of what it does now. And your device is compatible with their platform, service, and encoding formats. And the DRM implementation is compatible with your device, your cables, your speakers, and your ears. And you can pay to access that content in the location you happen to be living in, which is not always your choice. And you don’t have to buy a peripheral device just to access the content. And you trust them not to enshittify everything that you held dear about the original.

And and and… so the studio can keep making money off of them.

  • One time my friend even asked me to put on one of the padded jackets to practice holds on me, because I, a full grown man, is the closest equivalent to what they are dealing with at work.

  • While misconduct may have occurred here I have to mention that these rooms are highly important to the safety of these kids.

At special needs schools you can find many individuals who are having a bad day, and they can be incredibly violent to themselves and those around them. I personally know dozens of women who have come home from work with cuts, bruises, sprains and even broken limbs over the years. And these are people who were all professionally trained to hold the children in a very specific manor to both restrain and not harm them at the same time.

That doesn’t make it okay to do the things described here, but once it becomes politicized, you can find people who know nothing about the situation making it way worse for everyone.

An example of an obvious problem here: no one should ever be locked in these rooms, and an aide should always be watching them until they have calmed down from their outburst. The fact that locks even exist on those doors was just a ticking time bomb for something bad to happen to a child.
