  • It's worked in the past, but it's become worse and worse, and hardly loads anything if you're on nordvpn on your phone in my experience. Switched to Feeld a few months ago and it sucks way less

  • An insufficiently energetic particle approaches a window, which maxwell's demon attempts to close in its face. The particle slaps on the door and indignantly yells out "hey, I'm experiencing entropic decay here!", to which the demon replies with something inaudible but has no choice but to give way to the particle.

This joke eventually boils off to an indignant new yorker eventually making his way all the way inside the cryogenic canisters at Area 51 using the same technique. This is inarguably far worse than my Ontological Starbucks joke

  • Tried to assemble a joke about a molecule in the Maxwell's Demon thought experiment indignantly yelling "hey, I'm experiencing entropy here!" but there's a problem with the joke in concept since maxwell's demon's door is specifically meant to not interact with molecules that would continue on their way through the window unimpeded when they're sufficiently high energy. Imagine if the guy from Midnight Cowboy got mad at an invisible, ineffable presence silently determining his pathway through the intersection.

  • Appreciate it! The neck is tense but not painful.

I took your advice and did some gentle nerve exercises in the area while keeping a close watch for pain, will see if they pay off.

  • struggling to identify the type and cause of my nerve injury. it's localised around the back of my right shoulder, but radiates out and also is comorbid with some tingling down my right arm, and stiffness of spine. Doesn't seem to respond to ibuprofen or paracetamol. It's maybe a 3/10 stationary, 6/10 moving. pretty sure it'll go away on its own if I rest up.

I did do a bunch of back-focused workouts a couple days ago, but I would've expected muscle soreness rather than what appears to be a delayed-onset nerve pinch

  • To be fair, I'd feel pretty hard whippin around postnuclear miami-dade in one of these with my tits out

  • Fastforward four hundred years to the future in which local warlord clans have practiced their artillery on it until the only remaining letters say "BORAT VOICE MY WIFE"

  • How much are you off by? My singing teacher told me about a time when she walked into the booth and the recording engineers were talking about how much she was off by, she couldn't tell the difference either.

  • He looks like an embalmed corpse if the funeral director left his eyes open

  • Fuckin knee deep in twinks around here goddamn

edit: here being my new neighbourhood

  • Can't believe you'd mogmog me like ths

  • Artists hold leverage that they can wield if they organize strategically along material lines. What if illustrators unionized to mandate human oversight in AI-assisted comics? What if musicians demanded royalties each time their style trains a model?

The answer to this latter question would seem to be an enormous centralisation of royalties in the hands of a few artists whose style is in style at any given time, and no more actual work for many future artists. Not a ton different from the current state of affairs, just further accelerated.

I can't object to the broad strokes of the argument. It's a fair point. It still feels premature to use the term "AI", but I don't have any objections to the field of machine learning in general. We just happen to be living through a period in which some of the most gormless motherfuckers on this earth are using it for nefarious purposes.

  • If I were a fascist catholic I'd be pointing at that and saying "woooow mark of the beast!!" all the damn time

  • Man, Gordon Smith makes a good-ass guitar

  • It's legit imo, I think if you've got access to a good environment and are pretty certain you're ready to have your perception warped, it can put a solid dent in your anxiety. It worked on myself many years ago and a couple of friends fairly recently

  • Exaggerated foreshortening on Snoopy's nose as he accelerates the doghouse to 400km/h in 6 seconds. His nose bleeds

  • It's a great game, all of its fiddly little details and idiosynracies are geared towards making you think like an urban planner and industrial strategist. It can be incredibly demanding, or very easy, depending on the difficulty you select and the systems you enable/disable. The degree of customizability is very high.

For my part, I like playing with realistic mode construction but with maintenance, plumbing, heat, and waste management turned off, which makes it like a more arcadey, less punishing game primarily about construction logistics. Watching flatbed trucks move bricks and steel here and there, gradually growing a city without a gross excess of urban planning being necessary, that sort of thing.

Turning on plumbing, for instance, means you're now worried about where your water is coming from, how it gets to and from your sanitation facilities, and the position of your structures in terms of elevation since the slope of your sewer pipes is critically important, etc. The game is not exceptional about teaching you how this stuff works — youtube tutorials and experimentation were absolutely vital for me.

Conversely, turning off realistic construction means you can now drop down structures instantly without worrying about how the steel, bricks, etc get to your building site. Whole neighborhoods can be thrown down in minutes, and your tram line will be transporting your workers to your factories in like 20 mins instead of two or three hours.

I should say that the developers seem to have an idiosyncratic mix of nostalgia for the soviet period, actual faith in planned economies, and liberalism. They're not trying to convince you that you're running a facist totalitarian dictatorship or anything. The "party loyalty" system is presented basically without commentary as an abstract simulation of faith in the system. If you build a statue of Lenin, people's party loyalty will go up by 2.5% in the vicinity. They did use one of those novel image generators for the tutorial character portraits, which I wish they would replace, but it's not a prominient part of the game.
