  • Why are you deforming my words? You are free to have your own opinion and you are welcomed to disagree but when are arguing against something I did NOT say then you are not trying to have an honest conversation.

    Anyway, on the spirit of discussing anyway (despite the risk of talking past each other) what do you imagine would happen if nobody, including Linus, would contribute (not necessarily financially) to FOSS? If nobody at all build FOSS or supports FOSS, there is no FOSS, as simple as that.

    When we consider free and open source software NOT paid software, we are sabotaging the very things we love.

    • vacuum sealing
    • freezing
    • glass jars

    because to be honest I'm still shocked at how efficient that is. You can cook in batch then if the seal is done properly that stuff will last for a LONG long while. All those techniques require a bit of upfront cost (vacuum seal ~$100, freezer $300, jars $10 each but requires boiling water so ~$100) but when done properly (which isn't hard to learn) even texture will be preserved and it does not take long.

    Source : I do all that even though I don't cook for 1, it's great to cook in batch, eat fresh then preserve some to have a rotation of meals that is not boring yet have "last minute backups" when you don't have the time to cook.

  • Well I do mean physically opaque but true that implies, as few persons did comment regarding e.g. Poker, that the content itself or the rules do not change the distribution to introduce artificial scarcity.

  • What I tried to express is that when decks are

    • NOT the same
    • AND are sealed
    • AND there is a distribution of the content (namely some rare and non rare items)

    then the purchase of that deck itself is gambling.

    That does not imply anything about other situations, namely decks that are all the same can still be used for gambling when there are played with rules that do introduce randomness. A single coin for example can be used to bet.

  • Uno can be gambling too if you start to bet on round. Anything can be gambling if you want it to but poker with non convertible tokens isn't gambling. Betting on players also would be gambling. Anything can become gambling. If you think that's an overstatement look at predictive markets to see how broad bettable events can be, it's amazing scary.

    I can't explain the downvotes of others but I can explain mine :

    • China doing something good is good, but doesn't make China itself good
    • EU doing something good is good, but doesn't make EU itself good
    • the EU doing something like China doesn't make it China

    So I downvoted because I understood that the person posted assimilated similar behavior to similar intent. Regulating in a one party regime is NOT like regulating in a supranational political and economic union comprised mostly of parliamentary republics or parliamentary constitutional monarchies even if one regulation itself is literally the same.

    physical or not is prone to betting and thus addiction. We tend to ignore the thing we care about, because we are passionate or come up with explanations (not to say excuses or post-rationalization) but in practice it doesn't matter if your MTG deck is super "powerful" or that you see yourself as a great strategist, in fine if you do buy or promote those your are promoting gambling.

  • I don't use eSIM most of the time but when I travel and I don't want roaming, damn it's nice. I just go on Airalo or Saily, pick a destination, pay something like 20 bucks and get the data. I load it up on my phone, travel, land and voila, works right away while I'm still on my way through customs. No WiFi needed, no "quick" trip to a random shop or a large provider that'll try to upsell whatever. I just land, connect, use my VPN and voila.

  • The prices elsewhere is irrelevant. If there is 1 thing that is not movable it's precisely a house. One doesn't buy a building but rather a location. The price of real estate is about the infrastructure available.

    Anyway, even if it wasn't about location, location, location (the 1 rule in real estate) here the point is about citizenship, not actual houses. FWIW St Lucia is a beautiful place but... step out of a luxury hotel and see what happens. GDP per capita is low ($15K) and Gini coefficient is high.

  • FWIW I replaced my Samsung "smart" TV by a Nebula Mars video projector. It's very convenient and let's me forget I have it, tucked away and hidden most of the time. Yes it is "smart" but it's Android and I can connect via adb to it to install apps like VLC, make it start on boot, etc. I'm not updating it.

    Next time I do buy a replacement though I'll verify first in forums if it can be rooted to have the level of control I need. Maybe there will be a OSHW equivalent to https://www.crowdsupply.com/open-tools/open-printer for video projectors as unfortunately it seems like a trend.
