  • I just want to add that it's not just the idea of gender being immutable, it's identity as a whole. So much of society is built around stuff like legal names. They use them to track and control people. And then trans people are out there deciding to change them just because we want to, or using prefered names that don't match our legal names. The idea that people can just decide who they want to be is threatening to them.

  • I haven't seen anything quite like that yet, but for federated music there's bandwagon.fm which is more of a bandcamp equivalent. There's a lot of fediverse projects, so it wouldn't suprise me if there's something out there.

  • Sorted them into a few categories

    Social

    • Cheogram - xmpp chat, can also handle phone and sms gateways
    • Fedilab - my preferred fediverse app for mastodon
    • Jerboa - preferred lemmy app
    • K-9 Mail - email
    • Pixelix - pixelfed app. not sure if I like this or PixelDroid better yet

    Media

    • AntennaPod - podcasts
    • Kiwix - offline copies of useful wikis, q&as, archives, etc.
    • Librera FD - books
    • NewPipe - watch youtube videos, although google keeps trying to break it
    • Voice - audiobooks

    Security

    • Aegis - two factor authentication
    • KeePassDX - password management
    • WG Tunnel - VPN connection, still not sure if this is the best option

    Notes and Documents

    • Orgzly Revised - note taking. for people not familiar with emacs something like logseq or safe notes might be better
    • Pinkt - bookmarks
    • Syncthing-Fork - synchronize files between devices

    System

    • F-Droid - technically it can install itself
    • Lawnchair - alternative home screen / app launcher
    • ntfy - runs in the background, handles push notifications for some other apps
    • Unexpected Keyboard - has the fancy keys that most android keyboards leave out

    Other Tools

    • Fennec - basically firefox
    • Organic Maps - sometimes missing info and it doesn't have traffic data. simpler than OsmAnd
    • PocketPaint - make art on your phone
    • QuickDict - offline multi-language dictionary

I've got hundreds more installed, but those are some of my favorites.

  • This community is about debunking misinformation. Even for people who lie all the time it's important to keep track of what lies they tell and what the truth actually is.

  • For now that was just a bot mirroring posts. I don't think they've said whether they'll use that going forward.

  • Plenty of people still know or use the other meanings, and it's still based on common stereotypes. Reclaiming slurs only really works when it's done by the targeted group, and when the word is being used with positive connotations.

  • It was a term for modded crappy japanese motorcycles and cars, that derived from a slur for asian people.

  • A lot of people like to think that everything will work out okay. It's easier to think everything will be fine than to focus on the terrible things that are happening.

Then on the other side you have people that know things are bad, but give up because they don't know how to fix things.

I think eventually we'll make it through this, but you can't just be passively hopeful.

Things are bad and will get worse. But tons of people are actively working together to prevent as much damage as possible, supporting each other, and working towards a better world. As things get worse, more people will try to find ways to help each other.

We need spiteful hope and stubborn optimism. There are always ways to make things better, no matter how bad they get.

  • I'm pretty sure .art is run alone by Dan who also runs .social. I don't think he built up a mod team yet so it's probably mostly ignored for now.

  • They've done federation on a few test posts, but it's definitely not there yet for normal users to use.

  • I'm not sure about a bridge, but there's some services like friendica and hubzilla that can speak both protocols.

  • This is anonymous blog that's been out for a couple weeks, and still hasn't been verified by anyone else. It's possible it's real, but I would be very skeptical. The only 'proof' they give is links to ai documentation using trump as an example.

  • Liberapay is centralized but it is open source.

  • There's hundreds of other contributers, but he started them all and did the bulk of the work. The plan is to have more regular developers if they get enough donations.

  • Vidzy and the loops server code are available under AGPL. The loops app isn't open source yet, but has to be eventually as part of the NLnet grant agreement.

  • There's the federated wiki software ibis started by lemmy's developers.

  • There's also reTux which is another game using the same assets.

  • I feel like less common or more specific hashtags tend to work better. If you try to follow common words like art or music or dogs, it can overwhelm your feed and a lot of it is mediocre. If you browse those tags, you might see more specific tags used along side them focusing on what you actually want.

  • Have they been using AI art? All of their art that I've noticed has been from David Revoy.

And it's a fairly small open source project that only started working on the phone app last year. It's not that surprising they haven't gotten apps for every platform yet.
