  • Oops, I realize now that my comment made it seem like I can’t figure out how to write an image to external media and boot it properly. It was actually more intense than that, so I’ve updated it.

  • The manufacturer ships several tools but a lot of the necessary files are shared from Google Drive, and each time I try to download one it says “download limit exceeded.” My goal is to build something more vanilla — I can see that the hardware is supported in the mainline kernel so I’m doing this with tons of trial and error (which I don’t mind).

I’m doing everything in a Dockerfile so once I’m there the goal is to clean it up and push it to GitHub.

  • I’ve been killing myself in my free time to get a NanoPi R6S to boot from an SD card; wish I had this expertise.

Edit: I didn’t say this very clearly, I’ve been killing myself to build and compile U-Boot, the Linux kernel then building an image to write to an SD card that’ll actually boot.

  • I’m personally in love with ARM. I choose it for my router, Raspberry Pi and my MacBook is also ARM.

…but this still saddens me. I want to see good competition in the sector and I still have a soft spot for x86_64 on the server.

  • If I remember correctly the bad guys use similar characters that render the same (or close to) “standard” characters.

  • Saaaaaaaame though

  • Honestly if this is rolled out I feel like any criminals expecting to be impacted by this will just do some killswitch stuff once radios go down.

Can’t think of a good example other than one time I used a laptop’s built-in webcam to detect motion and shut down with the OS running entirely in RAM as an experiment.

It just feels like you could “detect” Homeland Security coming by watching radios and noticing everything being down.

  • The box routes the traffic over the Internet typically via Ethernet. The magic box opens a VPN tunnel to the carrier where the traffic is handled the same way it would be if you were using “real” LTE/5G.

  • Instead of offering WiFi why don’t they just set up LTE/5G in store? I once complained to my carrier about terrible reception and they sent me a magic box that takes cellular data, puts it in a VPN tunnel back to the carrier and goes on from there.

I thought these things were pretty normal, or am I missing something?

  • How is allowing people to use a VPN a legal/compliance issue? If anything the traffic is exiting to the internet elsewhere and because it’s encrypted you can’t see what’s happening, essentially offloading responsibility to someone else while still providing access.

  • Yeah, I’m a web developer and I get it from that perspective but as a VPN user I loathe websites that have a bunch of hoops to jump through. I just want better privacy laws (as well as to block ads/tracking, but that can be done without necessarily using a VPN).

  • I didn’t realize instances were doing this! That seems to go against the spirit of federated social media, FOSS, etc.

  • Yeah, if I’m paying but forced to watch ads I’ll drop the subscription, fuck that.

  • back then

    Fuck am I old??

  • While I’m not in love with proprietary software nor APIs from the start, I would accept some policy/regulation that would require smart device manufacturers to open-source the drivers after some given time.

Too many devices become obsolete software-wise then become e-waste not too long after. At least by open-sourcing you allow others to at least use the hardware, and the manufacturer benefits by saying “we didn’t just brick everything” while people who actually care to support it can do so.

  • racisting

  • It took me a long time to finally get into cooking but now I’m realizing just by cooking the most basic of recipes I’m already making meals 100% better. It’s a curse really because now going out to eat is disappointing.

  • You read my mind.
