  • We tried that in NZ, then conservatives got in power and just pressed ctrl z. Their argument was that tobacco taxes provided more income than that lost to public healthcare, but that was just a boldfaced lie.

Conservatives are literally a cancer on society.

  • The obvious feedback is be honest and tell them, but then again Indian parents are a different deal. My friend is now married to an Indian girl, and they lied about their relationship for about a year. She was "hanging out with friends" pretty much every weekend. She was "looking forward to sharing a bed after the wedding". And it worked out for them, she didn't get her relationship meddled in and they're none the wiser.

  • Lucky. I think about my own mortality literally every single night, it's become a pattern that I have to just stop thinking about, like, block that thought, think about something else otherwise panic.

I hate hate hate that I'm going to die, I will rage against it for as long as I live (hopefully forever as CRISPR will allow... Right?)

  • After the rate hikes in 2022, capital flight exceeded the additional revenue raised by the higher rates. And Norway had incentivised local governments to have a stake in the wealth tax which aided in the responsibility of the tax, something I haven't read France propose.

  • Ah, you're one of the morons who thinks a billionaire has a bank account filled with $1,000,000,000, just sitting idly, waiting to be added back into the economy by the government.

Good luck France, here's hoping you're the ONE country who can successfully institute a wealth tax.

  • "There's been plenty of historical examples where taxing the wealthy has worked". And yet they literally tried it IN FRANCE and it didn't work, France is literally the example used for capital flight.

What a lazy rebuttle, "you're doing the work of billionaires", lazy and without substance. But if you require a pledge of allegiance to the lower classes before I can talk tax: Idgaf if France decides to wealth tax every dime until billionaires earn $20 an hour. There you go.

Wealth taxes are extremely hard to implement. You're hand waving off-shore holdings like, "nations can enforce tax". Tell that to Ireland. Not to mention the costs involved with determining "wealth".

A wealth tax sounds lovely and appeals to voters, but it historically just doesn't fly. A VAT on luxury goods is way easier, cheaper, less risky, and achieves a lot of the same goals. It's just a lot harder to sell to mugs like you.

  • France tried this is the late 80s, 10-12,000 millionaires left and it lost money overall so they scrapped it. A wealth tax doesn't work in Europe where it's so easy to leave.

But my understanding is France is already pretty tax heavy, so I don't know of a better tax revenue solution.

  • No sorry it was ai

  • I think racism and tribalism is easy. It's the first thought of an uneducated person, it's base, it's instinct, and it feels good to follow through on any conviction. But most people had no good reason to he racist, you worked with a few migrants, the black guy at college was great, and Jackie Chan movies are great. Then the internet / bot farms / Russia came along, and fed the uneducated a constant steady stream of racist content. Couple that with the people who found politics too boring getting Donald Trump. And he's seen the racist bot farm content too! He just gets us! Bam, a recipe for disaster.

  • I'm with you, soldiers came back from war with PTSD just from seeing a dude get smoked, I don't need to watch that shit, much less take glee in watching it.

I accept that with him gone, the movement I disagree with has been kneecapped, but damn, watching what people say is one of the most gruesome shootings...

And all us millennials who said "man I watched such dark shit on early internet", and then to still watch Charlie get one tapped... Don't need that image rumblin round in the noggin.

  • Man the ones in Melbourne Australia cost up to $3,000 to adopt, unless you get Pitbulls and mastiffs, then it's $600. I just adopted a little Maltese looking thing for 1.5k

  • I thought basket of groceries on the belt was a social faux pas?

Because then the check out people can't plan their bagging of heavy / light?

  • Deep cut

  • Ive been here over a year and I still don't know wtf is going on. I don't know what aussie.zone is, I don't know what "local" is versus "all", I don't know what "all" includes and why it changes. I don't know how to find new subs except accidentally on "all", my brother wanted to drop Reddit and join Lemmy, I had no clue how I signed up.

But, after all that it's still better than Reddit.

  • Every time proper left wing policy is offered to Americans, you vote it down. Progressive policy does not fly in the US.

Your country has abandoned you GI, why donate your time and effort to a nation that only takes? Defect GI, migrate to a nation that appreciates your labour. Come to Australia! We have nationalised health care, some of the highest wages in the world, the best electoral system in the world, and Melbourne constantly ranking as one the best cities in the world.

  • I researched that, maybe it's just in Australia but apparently the bees here don't use those bee hotels? They apparently just get stacked with earwigs. I read the best thing you can do for bees here is plant native flowering plants like the Bottle Brush, and let leaves biodegrade naturally instead of hoovering em up.

  • Imagining complaining about someone tipping out fresh water, while eating a burger when a single kilo of beef uses between 15,000 to 200,000 liters.

Like, until you stop doing the worst thing a single consumer can do to the planet for literally nothing but greed and pleasure (eating meat instead of healthier alternatives), you have no leg to criticize.

  • The holocaust was well scaled too. Animal ag is responsible for 15-20% of the entire planets GHG emissions. You can live a healthier, more morally consistent life if you give up meat.

  • 1 beef burger is equivalent in water consumption to 7.5million chatgpt queries.
