  • For that I would rather recommend a terminal browser like lynx, w3m or links2 in example. curl is more like a single web request to download one piece of raw file (an html page or an image in example). It is not meant to interpret websites and display results. If you want save webpages for offline view, then something like wget.

  • Only if you are dependent on Ai, because you cannot program yourself or don't want to.

  • I would just use an old phone, either yours or maybe from your family. A dedicated alarm clock that stays at home and is always charged. It has only one job: alarming. No need to make yourself dependent on a random online website. This can be done offline.

  • I don't think so. Because they are different systems with different goals and different needs. If the community was named "Steam OS", then it would make sense. But this community is not about the operating system, but the device itself.

  • If no password is needed to do authentication, then any script and any user is able to do whatever they want on your system. Basically every script and application has root access by default. That is something you do not want to have. Even more important in multiuser environments.

  • Still same to me.

  • Then Mozilla should start listening to their users instead of driving them away.

I think the hope is to get more people in than losing them. But with Ai nobody will stay forever, because the time someone else makes a better Ai tool, they switch. Because Mozilla loses personality and uniqueness and start getting replaceable. ... just like employees who are forced to use Ai instead their own work and knowledge.

  • My two biggest issues with a fork are: a) timely updates, they take a bit longer than the main version, and b) trust issues, I don't trust most forks.

  • That bit was odd for me too. I think the author means "nobody" based on the online reactions and discussions about Firefox. And you shouldn't take the term/word too literal. So I can understand the view at least, because that is what I am getting too. The problem is, that mostly negative opinions are discussed. And mostly from tech people, which I personally assume most Firefox users might be.

  • Can I just take my Firefox Profile directory, and copy it over to LibreWolf? Does anybody know?

  • Hmm. I actually don't know why I don't get the "Profiles" menu, when clicking the "Account" icon as described in the link. Is it the icon that I can add by "Customize Toolbar"?

  • Looks like one of the better tutorial / documentation series in a blog I have seen a while for Bash. Most are short and shallow. I think this is NOT an Ai slop. I won't read it, because I know most of the basic stuff and some advanced stuff too. But from quick look I could recommend this. Well done.

  • The big video game publishers have acknowledged that their competitors are not only each other but other attention-hoggers like TikTok and Instagram.

Only Microsoft said this. I also don't want to buy and play games from a company who competes against TikTok. I want to buy and play games from companies who compete against other videogame artists and developers.

  • Yeah, its surprising. But kinda makes sense if you think about it. If you have profiles and sync, why would you?

  • You could always use profiles, its not really new. But it required you to run Firefox with commandline options. Whats new is just an integrated graphical user interface to select and manage profiles.

It should be described here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-management?redirectslug=profile-management-redirect-1&redirectlocale=en-US (updated a week ago). For some reason, clicking the account icon does not have the "Profile" submenu for me. And I am on the newest Firefox. Do you have the menu?

  • For what the system offers, its unlikely to be this expensive. Valve also stated the price will be on the "low end of self build PCs". That's a bit vague, but it does not imply 1000 Dollar. Given with what Valve achieved with the Steam Deck, and that they know how important the price is, it will be cheaper for sure. Some analysts also tried to estimate the price for each part of the system and they landed on something like 415 Dollar. Sure, that's not all to it, but its far away from 1000.

I'm not an analyst. My price expectation is at $549 for 512gb model and $699 for 2tb. If I am off, it won't be more than +-100 Dollar difference.

  • Backticks are not very distinct, as they can be confused with single quotes (depending on the font). Also $() shows the beginning and end of the command very clearly. This is even more important when you have multiple of them in some variable in example. Not to mention that you can nest $(), but that is something I personally don't like to do anyway.

There are some functional differences too: https://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/html_node/Command-Substitution.html , such as that backtick command set as an alias in your bashrc will be executed once on load. While $() version is executed every time you execute the alias. Also backslash is literal in the backtick variants (with exception). All in all I never use backtick command substitution; it's confusing, limited and deprecated.
