  • Gentoo experience?

  • How is it bloated if you decide what to put on? Gentoo isn't a traditional distribution, its what you make it to. Still you have to answer for yourself why you even want to switch to Gentoo. And if all the extra work for compilation is worth it. Do you even want to compile everything and customize the compilation process? If not, maybe Gentoo is not for you. That's the thing. Only you can answer that.

  • Why do you want switch to Gentoo in the first place? I think its a good idea if you want to customize and build lot of applications yourself. Besides heavy hitters like browsers or the Kernel. So only you can answer if this is a good idea for you.

  • While I agree its not adding anything, I don't get why one gets upset about titlecase for blog post titles. I mean its not like something making it less readable or less indexable or anything like that. So why even ask to stop doing it? Or does it do any harm I'm not aware off (even if its for readable reasons in your opinion). I personally prefer normal case for titles as well, but that is just a preference of mine, not because I see any benefit in doing so.

  • I was there too doing lot of generalized functions that do everything. And I always hated the code. I am just hobby commandline guy, but even that is horrifying code. Doing this in complex code bases with real world impact is just bad.

  • Trying to abstract everything away in multiple layers of classes and function calls, just to avoid to write a 2 lines of code twice is the biggest evil in programming. Well probably not the biggest, but a huge problem in my opinion. Adding unnecessary complexity due to being clever is evil.

  • I want to say, it takes a while to learn many stuff in Linux. You didn't learn everything of Windows in one video or blog post either. And in Linux, its even "worse", as it is open ended with many operating systems and replaceable parts. That means its by design more to learn than on Windows. I'm just setting expectations. "Learning Linux" is not a single event or product you learn, and you hopefully never stop learning.

    1. Maybe start at high level "What is Linux?".
    2. Go into "The Linux Filesystem".
    3. Learn about "Linux Philosophy and Shell Tools".
    4. That should lead you into scripting with "Bash".

    That should give you a bit of background and basics to start with. Just search these terms and start learning and experimenting. Plan years into learning...

  • This question is probably as old as Linux itself. While many (me included) do not like Ubuntu anymore, I still think its a good operating system for newcomers to Linux. Not at last because of the community it has. Ubuntu is only by those dislike who are long enough in this game. There are also different variants with different user interfaces and such (like Kubuntu).

  • I do not agree. While it was not an official statement, he still works at Valve. So his opinion is connected to Valve. We should not ignore that. He is not ANY developer. The only thing is, I should have made that more clear in my initial reply, but I think its not really needed because we know the context he is a developer on his own private account. But I would not ignore that.

  • Yes, we should celebrate transparency. Even if every game includes Ai in development in some shape or form, its good to know what exactly was done. In some cases its even a little less harmless or even acceptable (like generating meaningless terrain) than in other cases.
