Yeah, military service used to guarantee college with the GI bill. I haven't looked at it in a long time, but I believe it's been cut a lot. Military was a way for many low income families (my father at the time, late 80s) to literally get on their feet, work, money, education, pension/retirement.
Have ALWAYS felt everyone should do 1 full year or retail or 2 full years of a military service right after high school. Bring back free college for armed services and better availability of education for all.
