  • Well, this thread has strengthened my desire to adopt a teen from foster care. I technically have/had a family but they were more like roommates than parents. Left at 18 and never looked back. Had my share of lonely holidays that I would dread when they came around. I'm not trying to say I've had the same story as those here, but I get some parts of it really well. I'm finally at a place where maybe I can prevent that from happening to someone else.

  • I vaguely remember it being put on hold for some alignment with European privacy laws or something along those lines.

  • English is a descriptive language instead of prescriptive, so make it happen!

  • If you want to dip your toes, go with something easy. Popos or Linux Mint are the two most often suggested. Lesser offered but with a Mac OS feel is Elementary.

  • Oh man, I clicked that link really hoping you were going to link to a Dyson Sphere.

  • That's why I loved StumbleUpon when it first came out. I discovered so many cool niche things that way.

  • Welcome! Don't be surprised if you feel the need to try out all the distros!

  • Same when I was living in Spain. It was so quick and easy, I almost never needed assistance. There was a noticeable difference when ingot back to the States.

  • Popos is a good choice. It's a solid distro and a good introduction to Linux. You can distro hop later, start with something easy for now. I installed it as a dual boot in case I needed Windows for something, but this is the first distro I haven't felt the need to switch back.

  • Started in college with Mandrake Linux. Used it off and on over the years, though I kept switching back. I recently settled on PopOS. Part of what kept me switching back was not having the time to tinker with it. Now that it mostly works, it's become my daily driver.

  • What do you do about phone contacts? Since android phones seem to link them automatically, I haven't tried too hard to get away from contacts. The other two I've managed to do away with.

  • I'm late, but I have Obsidian set up with Syncthing and it works flawlessly. I adore Syncthing and would be lost without it!

Depending on your note taking needs, if Obsidian is too much, you could do the same with Notable/Noteless and Syncthing.
