  • What a weirdo comparison to make.

  • It just so happens that it always boils down to policing what Muslims do. Just one big coincidence.

  • Russia is a genocidal gangster petro-state, led by a criminal wanted by the ICC, that should be kicked out of Ukraine, but credit where credit is due: the most recent era of great power military adventurism started when the US ignored the UN and international law to invade Iraq in 2003. So if we want to talk about who drove the world in this shit, the answer is clearly the USA.

  • Being pedantic with the meme are we?

The point is that we need to break that piñata.

The "what" is the primary message of the meme. The "how" is up for debate. We can do it the nice and easy way, institutionally and orderly, with wealth taxes that are punitive enough to undo the obscene degree of inequality. Or we can do it the hard way with guillotines. Obviously I much much rather prefer the first, I would indeed like to keep my hobbies and walk my dog. So the patricians better go along, because the plebs cannot be blamed if they end up with no other option than violent revolution.

  • Because they are. The article links to actual photos.

  • It's a journalistic magazine, not a scientific journal or a think tank. These are not "reports", they are articles, similar to what you would find in the Globe and Mail, or The Walrus. I am confused as to why this needs to be explained.

    EDIT: Also:

It feels if you want a report critical of Canada, you can go there, and there is nothing else.

Again with the pseudo-patriotic BS. Being critical of Canada is not something to judge a publication about. We are a democracy. We get to fucking do that. We don't have loyalty tests.

  • Regarding the credibility of the journalism, I disagree with you, I see multiple cited sources and I see a coherent journalistic argument. But that's a fair disagreement, you think it's not enough economics research, and that's fine. We can agree to disagree.

    But this?

Unfortunately it is the media outlet. The entire ‘Canada Dimension’ site looks like a dumping ground of anti-Canadian propaganda with sensationalist headlines aimed at making the country look bad.

What a profoundly misguided and antidemocratic thing to write. WTF. "Anti-Canadian propaganda"? "Making the country look bad"? WTF. When opposition to the government is being treated as treason, a very weird turn has been taken.

For what it's worth, The Canadian Dimension is a magazine that has been in publication since 1963 and has recently become online-only, while maintaining a serious commitment to quality through its editorial board.

  • Everyone wants the war to end, yet no one has a ready-made solution — perhaps there are none. We owe each other the honesty this moment demands. Anything short of Russia’s full withdrawal from Ukraine is profoundly unjust and outright dangerous, but an uncompromising pursuit of justice can also bring us to the point of no return.

Survival itself — enduring as an independent nation despite Putin’s history lectures — is already a victory for Ukraine. But the story won’t end there. Greedy states attack not because they are provoked, but because they can do so. Stopping them will take more than moral force.

  • Of course it's about leverage otherwise it wouldn't sound silly to talk about Canada cutting off relations with the US over its arming of Israeli genocide the way we have for a Russia's genocidal actions in Ukraine. Canada just doesn't have the political weight to cut off relations with 2/3rds of the permanent members of the UN Security Council. If you take moral absolutist positions, take them all the way to the end.

That said, I'm sorry but are you lost or do you have some kind of agenda? This is the thread under an article about the Canadian-UAE relations. If you want to start a conversation on Canadian-Chinese relations you're free to submit a relevant article at !canada@lemmy.ca

  • Exactly. The point is educational alignment: designing coursework to achieve learning objectives given that students have access to generative AI. That requires work from the educators and honest communication with the students about the capabilities, dangers, and moral hazards of generative AI. You can't just pretend that word calculators don't exist.

  • Well, your toothbrush is gross and your toes smell like canola oil.

  • And shitty communists go around purging other communists in kangaroo courts and show trials.

Shitty communists impose cults of personality and destroy workers democracy.

Shitty communists also refuse to learn from a century of shitty communism and still cling to old categories as if they have any meaning today. I mean you can stan Robespierre all you like but in the end of the day, the 1871 Commune was never going to be run by 1789 Jacobins much less fucking bonapartists.

  • I don't know about "bashing" Canada. I think criticizing the government is the patriotic thing to do when the government is doing shitty things. But I mean, we are in !canada@lemmy.ca not in, for example, !world@lemmy.world. I would assume the context here is Canada. If @sepia@mander.xyz wants to discuss China's role in the UAE, I would assume a more generalist community would be the right forum, unless there is some particular Canada-specific angle.
