    The above unit has a ton more additional functionality such as room correction, streaming support, digital connectivity, a DAC, multi room support, and far better audio quality.

    Sure, not all of it is cheap, however neither was a full stack like the OPs picture.

  • It gets worse if you compare Jane with Janet and John who both earn say 50k each, as they still get that child benefit despite their combined net income being about double what she earns.

    They simply refuse to look at household income, and treat even married couples as singletons living separately for this.

  • Its not one bus for any sort of remotely regular service, and even if it was its not one driver either, unless you don't run the service one or more days a week or while they are on holiday or while the bus is out of action for repairs or servicing.

    I am not going to pretend that a bus isn't cheaper, because it is, but its not massively cheaper than an existing railway service in good repair.

    Part of the problem when the UK went through the same changes was that the local branch lines had 4 people working each train, and that train might service less than 50 people during a quiet day. Sure, a bus can have 1 person working it, but so can a train. Stations also used to be heavily maned, it was ridiculous.

    Rather than fixing the issue we moved to Motorways, minster in charge of it owned a company building them, funny that and buses that were cancelled for the same lack of demand.

    Public transport (which includes buses) is either expected to be a cost to the tax payer or its not practical long term. The only other alternative offered to rural areas is the car, totally shit idea for mass transport.

    Every route that is still profitable has been enshitified to such a degree its now extremely expensive and unpleasant to use.

  • Do you have actual numbers that support that for the French bus service replacing their rail? As when that was mooted when Beeching did the same rail cuts to the UK railway lines, the buses for small and unpopular branch lines lasted a year or so before they were also cancelled or massively scaled back

  • People are fed up with being broke and not able to afford the same things that they or their parents could afford even 20 years ago. Populists do not have to offer policies they can or event intend to implement so they can promise any old shit to the gullible who want change. Wrap that in a reassuring racist package: immigration is out of control, send back the small boats, etc. so that it doesn't smell like communism (not that communism cant be racist) that people confuse even moderate socialist policies for due to decades of western propaganda.

    Couple this with the Overton window being moved ever towards the right due to left and center left parties being captured by neoliberals who seek funding and patronage from the Rich, plus decades of the press putting pressure on any left wing policies by enforcing a double standard of left wing policies required to fully document how they will work and be funded, while right wing fantasy policies are waved through without any scrutiny from the majority of press.

    Then the right deliberately break any essential service, under fund it and spend it elsewhere, making it time consuming and expensive to fix, leading them to point at their opponents being ineffective, and the press refuse to hold the right to account over this.

    This has reduced any coupling between those left of the far right and the general population in terms of policies meeting the requirement. You can start to see why they are gaining ground.

    They are such a useful tool, I've cut thousands of floor boards and framing with mine.

  • Hillary probably didn't do it because shes not very likeable, it would have been another Jeb Bush style mistake. Jeb made himself look worse, so sometimes not bothering is the lesser hurt. Hillary is a long way from her husband in that regard when he was at his peak. Bernie would make it work, that's obvious, but then he would never had not done it.

    The problem is that you don't just need one thing, you need as many things as you can get, and what you certainly do not need is your own party's management working against you. Winning when they cut you off becomes very difficult as you lose the biggest funding hose.

  • The problem is that Bernie is too left leaning for the right of the Dems. Its highly likely people who supported and funded Hillary would have withdrawn their support and money, and some may have even given it to Trump instead. You can see with Mamdani how that's playing out, they'd rather field Cuomo as a spoiler candidate than let a progressive win.

    Dont get me wrong, it was clearly manipulated to steal the nomination from Bernie, and Bernie would have been the better candidate and president than Hillary, but I no longer think it would have been the slam dunk that I did at the time he would get in, simply because hes against both sets of interests at the top of the Dems and the Repubs.

However as the people who are running things are Elon, Sam, and Mark, there is fuck all chance of that and whatever this ends up as it will be exploitative and will result in deaths.

  • Those who purchased farms to avoid paying IHT such as Clarkson can usually afford to pay for a good accountant to help them plan avoiding as much IHT under the new rules as possible as its quite generous if you have at least seven years (and money for a good accountant) before your kids will inherit.

    Those who are actual multi generational farmers, even if that's just the parents and the children they want to inherit the farm, there aren't that many who are over the threshold for a married couple plus the various exceptions if they can go the seven years.

    Its those who lack the time or lack the quality advise that will struggle, its not a huge number, less than 500 farms a year should be dragged into paying more without proper planning at the seven years to implement it due to allowances. I think thats the only bit I do not like, as once again we have allowed a loop hole for those who can and should be paying more tax and the expense of everybody else.

  • Two decades ago we needed the water companies to fix their leaks rather than paying bonuses, dividends, and loan repayments to help the former.

    At least that long ago we needed more reservoirs rather than allowing the cost and nimbies to stop them.

    But right now we need to be cutting back on new data centres and other new projects that can't afford their water debt. Stop making the problem worse without an actual plan or funding to fix it.

  • Its possible that the local businesses have lost business because terminally lazy people can no longer park directly outside their shops and will not walk a short distance to them, this should be extremely easy for the business to prove if its actually true, I have my doubts its a significant amount. I suspect the people most inconvenienced by not being able to park outside the businesses are those that actually work there. This is the only remotely serious suggestion I see from the anti bike lane crowd in this instance.

    My local village center is meant to be no parking on the high street, has had times its been enforced properly and times its been ignored due to pressure by local businesses. Recently they started enforcing it, directing people to the free (under two hours) car parks on the edge of the high street. Car parks were full with people who own and work in the shops, so they prevented them from parking in the car parks all day, so now they park on the residential streets off the high street enforcement area.
