Shitposter while I tend to two babies. Maybe when I have my life back, I'll help us get a few more niche communities back?

  • I think he kinda makes that point with his personal thinking on backgrounds. He doesn't do them. Maybe AI can help there, maybe not, but there are also amazing background artists just as there are very good character artists you could, but likely wouldn't afford, for your tabletop RPG. And those will be... acceptable as a visualisation, even if not quite a piece of inspired art.

  • Interesting, but torrents have legal uses so it shouldn't be too surprising. I've had data sets provided by torrent due to size, although it's not that common.

Do keep in mind, is a school Internet if it's on the dorm so this is probably more a warning than anything. It's not that different than trying to do illegal stuff on a library computer (or even legal stuff like porn. Don't do that on a school or work computer, lol).

I did find it interesting that my own school Internet in student apartments didn't have this problem, though. Iirc, that was because it was individually done via spectrum, not a campus intranet. My personalized orientation, the grad student showing me around even had pirating suggestions, lol.

  • Yeah, that tracks with what I see, at least. Either it's used as an excuse for layoffs that likely would happen anyway given the market, or they're just included in a workflow without firing (the US was already in bad shape after COVID, with tech companies already laying off people they over-hired during lockdown)

I've got a friend who pays under the table to a guy to write and edit instructional videos, and still does that since there's never enough videos to produce for her project. Just, now, the guy uses AI in his workflow and... I'd say maybe produces at about the same pace (fact checking the AI takes time, lol).

But basically, AI didn't replace her copy writer / editor, they just scaled up (or at least, attempted to, lol).

  • I however found it mildly interesting that Zohran Mamdani was making this part of the issues he's messaging about for NYC, to at least drive down the price for locals. Free childcare, public owned groceries, sure, but FIFA tickets? Yet this graphic kinda puts that in perspective, so I get it.

  • Yup, and that's cognitive dissonance. Now we've covered an entire lecture, lol.

  • To add, our brains are lazy (or "efficient") and it's literally more work to rearrange knowledge (accommodation) than to just adjust new knowledge to fit current schemas (assimilation). It's likely a product of evolution since wasted energy gets us killed, thus we kind of have to force it into cognitive thought to overcome it.

Apt this comes from social psych, given that discipline practically emerges from post WW2 "why would people follow Nazis?" questioning.

  • A strengths based perspective acknowledges that being able to identify every detail in a mundane process is a good thing. Probably a reason ADHD people excel at programming, for instance.

  • Surprise, emergency rooms are often subsidized when people are treated and discharged without the ability to pay. It was one of the rationals for why ACA was cost saving.

  • Uh... kinda weird the valuation of the home is in the headline, right?

  • To each their own, I felt like Portal 2 was better because of it's length and storytelling. I recall single player being maybe 8-10 hours? Beatable in a single weekend, in any case.

  • It's a foolish strategy, as we know the great baristas of Portland are a far greater threat than any baristas ever encountered in Los Angeles. Their oat milk lattes oatier, their half caf flat whites flattier... the California National Guard may be no match.

  • It's kind of a who's who of questionable comedians. Curious from a moral perspective: if one takes the gig and donates their proceeds to a charitable cause, are they off the hook?

Another thing I'm reminded of is, I've heard many big comedians have had a gig at a corporate event at one point or another (I've heard some refer to them as terrible audiences lol). In that world, you're kinda trained early on to never turn down a gig... but if they were to headline a company event for say, Nestle or United Healthcare or something, are we ok with that too?

  • Was gonna say, those exact names would be the people I expect to not go. Atsuko and Marc in particular would really surprise me.

  • "I wish I won more Internet arguments..."

  • Reminds me of the double standard with teacher sexual abuse. Male teacher abuses student, pedophile. Female teacher abuses student, "wish I was him" (unless she was deemed ugly, and even then).

Things don't change much, although it doesn't help when people forget men can be victimized, too.

  • My favorite part of these comments are the number of people coming to the realization they may have sleep apnea, lol

  • You and me both; the advice that worked ok for me is a pillow between the legs and proper placement under the head that keeps everything level.

They also suggested we get the softer mattresses, since we want a little extra dip for the shoulders and hips. That advice is a mixed bag, though, as I still get shoulder pain. Might be the cheap foam, though.

  • "Dem Leaders Betrayed The Base" is kinda their whole campaign, innit?
