  • I was 4 and my grandma was visiting and was supposed to look after me while my parents went out. They gave her the VHS of the first Terminator. I snuck into the living room and watched a bunch of it without her noticing. Afterwards, all the toy robots had to be taken out of my room because ‘the man with the red eye took his eye out’. My parents were then able to put one and one together.

    Nowadays one of my favorite movies, tbh.

  • I have. And yet I never had the feeling that my club's achievements were mine, unless I had contributed to them. And even then, I was just proud to have been part of the team with which I achieved the performance. I can differentiate very well.

  • Patriotism is the little sibling of nationalism, and the boundaries are fluid. I will never understand why people are proud of other people's accomplishments and make them their own. Or is it because people were shat on somewhere else in the world than everyone else? Makes absolutely no sense.

  • Not sure, but I think that wasn't because of higher temperatures but higher levels of oxygen in the atmosphere.

  • Funny, I heard the exact same explanation for Dark Matter. But the context was 'so we know, there's something there, we cannot explain, which is why we need to study more or even rethink what we thought to know about gravity/the universe'. Science is awesome!

  • Not having kids is just as much a life choice as not letting her move in. She will have to respect that. Her attitude is further reason to not let her move in. She sounds horrible. Why rely on you, if she has money or even more money to give away? This is a horrific power game you can only lose if you give in. I guess she is someone who never had to deal with the consequences of behaving like an asshole. Time to show her that respect has to be earned. And she lost hers for you, if she ever had any.

  • This is just another feature of tribal thinking. For various reasons, people are no longer able to differentiate, so that at almost all levels it is now all about “us” versus “them”. And how did that come about? Those who have power and money make the rules and distract us from the real causes of people's problems by dividing us. And most people seem to swallow this unreservedly. If you don't believe me, just read the comments here in this thread alone.
