  • Germany has an extremely strong automobile lobby. They're very dependent on the car industry. So politicians taking the money from these companies, which is a lot of them, sabotage infrastructure programs, and instead pump more money into cars. Similar issue to America really, and it's an issue caused by America having a massive presence in Germany and playing a big role in West German law & reconstruction.

Former East Germany generally has significantly better urban design & public transit infrastructure than former West Germany, but the government neglects the east part of the country as well as implementing the car-ification I mentioned before, plus the AfD (basically the modern Nazi party) is becoming in-charge there, so it's getting worse over time.

  • his brain is fluid, we know that for sure

  • The character is Miyako Hoshino, the protagonist of Wataten! An Angel Flew Down to Me (Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita!), a yuri romcom about a college student falling in love with an elementary schooler, written by a guy

Yes, lesbian pedophile is a subgenre now, and it's mediocre as fuck at best

  • You can get the same effect with Floorp. I mean it technically still has Pocket built in but it's 1 click to completely disable rather than all the hoops you have to go through in normal Firefox.

  • I would consider myself a Marxist, with some asterisks, just not a Marxist-Leninist. The way I intend for communism to be achieved is for there to be an eventual revolution of the workers – realistically, this won't happen in a society where anti-socialist biases are widespread from indoctrination, so the strategy before then would to push for social democracy and better education until people are more receptive to socialist messaging. Post revolution, it becomes more complicated.

I call Marxist-Leninists authoritarian because, from my view, the stateless democratic endgoal of it would be impossible in a capitalist world – as long as there are powerful capitalist countries with anti-socialist, any true democracy attempting to achieve communism is easily sabotaged (looking at Latin America, or Palestine where Israel funded Hamas to sabotage the PLO, or even Iran which wasn't socialist at a but was labelled "socialist" and got a CIA-created monarchist revolution). The conclusion I draw is that in a geopolitical climate like with say, the USA, the only communist countries that can exist are the ones which have a highly authoritarian government and generally violate human rights or basic freedoms a lot.

So, that begs the question you asked, really – if communist worker's democracy is impossible in a world with too much working against socialists, how should one expect to take the leap from a capitalist world to a socialist world? I don't think that's something I have a really definite plan for, but if I had to make an attempt, I think the most likely way is to do what I originally mentioned but on a global scale – getting enough people around the world accustomed to socialists, communists, and even just very left-leaning social democrats, getting them familiar with leftist ideology and grievances, enough for one spark to be enough to start a global revolution all in a relatively short timespan. After that, the immediate priority should be education reforms and pushing education heavily, since I believe full democracy can only work if it's a democracy of the well-informed. There should be armed forced to take care of any imperialist leftovers, but other than that I think it should be a highly centralized worker's democracy, working towards full communism. Now, this almost sounds like democratic/reformist socialism with a revolution thrown in once you get far enough, which would be ironic because I always bash reformist socialism for expecting socialism to be achievable in the framework of a fundamentally capitalist system (which let me be clear, I think is impossible). But looking at the modern capitalist world powers, most of which are rabidly against communist countries, I just don't see a way in which communism can be achieved globally – the USA and Europe probably need a revolution before the world can start transitioning away from capitalism.

When it comes to the difference between authoritarianism and democracy, there's no clear answer, but people in communist countries that have existed have very little influence from voting, and civil liberties are highly restricted (the USSR even started collapsing once people got free speech). I honestly couldn't clearly define the point where it stops being "democracy" – the answer is far more complicated than I could imagine.

As for your initial statement – I have seen a lot of socially conservative communists. The OP of the current post, for example, has a post basically mocking being social progressive because "no war but class war". I think a lot of communists misinterpret this as "the fight for social progress is a distraction from class conflict", when in reality it means something along the lines of "we shouldn't discriminate against each other over ethnicity, gender, sexuality, etc.", we should work to improve both the rights of marginalized groups and fight the war against capitalism. A really common sentiment I've seen among MLs is basically trying to use "

    <x western military>

is full of queers and women" as an insult (although the actual wording is... a lot more inflammatory). There seems to be a lot of extremely bigoted rhetoric passed around, although I haven't seen it brought up on Lemmy comments a lot, and I haven't seen enough of communist communities to know how common the sentiment is here.

  • There doesn't exist a thing as a "free market economy" on a large scale. It's an impossibility. Attempts at pure capitalism converge to diet fascism. But even if this hypothetical free market were to exist, it inevitably becomes a system where a small minority of people control the many. It's a system that all but guarantees a wealth gap divide and generational wealth. It's a system where the more capital you have, the more voting power you have ("vote with your dollar" is a capitalist phrase for a reason). It's a system where resources are distributed based on capital, and capital is a resource, and obviously more resources allows you to generate more capital – do you see the problem here? Over time, most of the power accumulates in the hands of a few.

Despite the forum we're on, I'm definitely not a Marxist-Leninist (nor a follower of any variation of highly authoritarian leftism or socially conservative leftism) and probably wouldn't be described as a "communist" – it does get fuzzy there though since in a hypothetical unified or post-scarcity world I would want communism... Regardless of the terminology, surely you agree with me that attempting a "free market capitalist" economy is a very bad idea, and at minimum you need a well-regulated mixed economy to function?

  • They're a troll who posts a bunch of pseudointellectual/pseudophilosophical comments saying stupid shit mentioning quantum physics or lambda calculus or euclidean geometry or other fancy looking math words

  • That sounds like a terrible decision to make considering 50% of Israelis live in the 30 most populated cities, cities which are all clustered together and very bombable... then again, I don't think jets from the late 70s would fare well against Israel's very modern air defenses. An ancient F-14 or a MiG-29 would probably spontaneously collapse at the sight of a Patriot SAM operated by Israel.

  • Web bloat in a nutshell and why we need to switch to things like Web Assembly more than ever. It's not WASM, but I used Laminar which is a Scala.js library, and it's the absolute pinnacle of (frontend) web development. Scala in general is just really great for idiomatic web code, its flexibility is unbeatable.

Another amazing alternative would be anything Rust. In fact I've used that much more than Scala for web. I've mainly used Leptos for full-stack and and Actix for backend, but I've seen Dioxus and Axum in good use and they both seem really great too.

Apparently Lemmy uses Leptos for its UI so... that's a +1.

  • Japanese employers are currently under a major "crisis", that crisis being that Gen Z employees won't work 20-40 extra hours in a week unpaid, won't participate in corporate family culture "bonding with your boss" bullshit, wont take 「no, I refuse your notice of quitting」 as an answer, actually report workplace (sexual) harassment, among other things. Except unlike in America, the employers in Japan are actually having to adapt to employees respecting themselves because their population is on the brink of collapse from not having enough young people lol, they don't just have other people they can hire. Obviously because of the unbearable work "culture" which doesn't allow you to have a family life, combined with the rampant sexism against women throughout Japanese society and culture keeping them from interacting with men.

Finally, something good comes out of my ADHD. I'm invincible against THCA drug tests!

    (I'm kidding)

  • Don't worry, when we eventually get basic human needs down such as universal healthcare and other social welfare, worker's rights, and liveable non-car dependent infrastructure, I'm sure everyone will start moving to the US instead of Canada and you'll be saved. I give it... a few decades, when the climate catastrophe starts becoming apparent.

  • I am a Scala and Rust fan. I can corroborate what you said

The part about no semicolons/curly braces I like in Scala is that I can write a function and it'll look virtually indistinguishable from a regular ol variable. Functions become much less of a ritual and integrate more nicely with the rest of the code. Other than that though, Rust definitely wins out because of the curly braces & semicolons. I use curly braces in most situations in Scala where I'd normally use them in Rust, and I would use semicolons everywhere in Scala if it weren't considered unidiomatic. Whitespace-significant syntax is just really annoying to deal with. Using Python or even maybe F# makes me want to die because I keep accidentally missing an indent somewhere or indenting too much somewhere else or using the wrong kind of whitespace and the entire program implodes. At least Scala and Kotlin keep it sane

Also it's just way harder to visually organize in whitespace based languages. You basically have to do a bunch of magic tricks to make the code look slightly different in a specific scenario than what the language wants you to. Rust allows you to actually visually organize your code easily while also having a strong style rules which you shouldn't stray too far from (or else the compiler will yell at you).

  • "Lies and insults" LOL taking the MAGA stance I see. I literally just stated historical events and factual information. The fact that you apparently believe the party isn't incredibly corrupt and a sucker for lobbying money is worrying to say the least. It's not hard to look up basic information on money lobbying; the site even shows you how much each specific pharmaceutical company, university, bank, investment company, and much more is investing into all these Democrats! A lot of familiar names on there, no? And guess what – plenty of these conservative/centrist Democrats were heavily promoted by the party over actually principled progressive Democrats which were as (or more) likely to win! Are you going to decry that as "fake news" too?

You know you have no argument when "you're a leftie who won't vote for Democrats!!!" doesn't work. That's precisely your entire stance, "Democrats are better than Republicans so you're wrong because you think voting is useless". You literally crumble apart when you see that other people can both realize that the Democratic party is fucked up and realize that the only option is voting blue. It just doesn't match up with your worldview. I'm sorry you can't take even a bit of your own medicine, I get that you love throwing around insults, but if you do that you gotta learn to take them instead of immediately starting to whine and complain about other people insulting you back.

  • I'm sure voting for Republicans or not voting will help though right?

Stopped reading after this. You are a dumbass. I never even implied this. It takes about 5 seconds of looking through my profile to see that I borderline shill for voting for the Democratic party. In fact, if you read even just the last sentence of my comment, you should immediately realize that I was wishing for Democratic candidates to win these upcoming elections. You need to learn to think past a binary "full dicksucking of Democratic party = good, pointing out that Democratic party is fucked up = anti progressive Republican voting tankie and bad". Please grow up.

I felt like I already made it obvious enough, but in case I didn't: the Democrats are the only choice. They're the better choice. That doesn't mean that people like you can start crying about leftists being too harsh on the party when people point out how much the Democratic party has intentionally fucked us over time and time again, and the leaders of the party effectively completely block enough dedicated progressive leaders from actually being elected to make the differences that people vote Democrats in for. This process isn't "democracy", this is sacrificing the wants and needs of the voters for personal financial gain. It's evil, and it's cruel. They are causing an incredible amount of suffering and death. It's not that the Democratic party "can't" do it, it's not that they would lose voters if they did it. These are literally the things the Democratic party as a whole campaigned on and put on their agenda each time, the voters explicitly expected them to follow through on the policies they ended up intentionally not passing. It's that the Democratic party is extremely corrupt regardless of how you look at it. The way the party is run would probably be illegal in most of the first world. The fact that the "alternative" is borderline Nazis doesn't make them the hero of the story, or undeserving of being torn apart by criticism. When the Democratic party as an organization stops spending millions to fuck over progressive politicians which otherwise would have won elections, and stops killing their voters because of lobbying from healthcare corporations, fossil fuel corporations, AIPAC, etc. then they'll be deserving of the benefit of the doubt when it comes to these situations.

  • No. He is completely wrong. Drag isn't "reducing a woman's identity" to anything, because femininity isn't a woman's identity. People who do drag aren't pretending to be women. Drag partially exists to blur gender lines and challenge our perceptions of gender, and mostly exists because many people feel affirmed by femininity and are most comfortable when they're participating in what we see as feminine culture.

Cultural perceptions of femininity aren't equivalent to womanhood. Femininity does not "belong" to women and masculinity does not "belong" to men. Imagine how insane it would be if we called women wearing pants and other clothes that used to be associated with men "blackface for men" lol.

  • Remember when the Democrats had both congress and the presidency twice? Remember when the Democratic party kept promoting extremely conservative Democrats that beforehand constantly voiced their opposition to progressive policies, over their progressive enemies? Remember people like Joseph Lieberman? Remember Jay Rockefeller, who was the deciding vote for the ACA who suddenly reversed his pro-public healthcare rhetoric and opposed it he said because "the timing wasn't very good"? Remember what they did to progressives like Jamaal Bowman? You know, putting all their resources into George Latimer (a blatantly pro-wealthy, pro-corporation, pro-Israel conservative) to get Bowman unseated, making it the most expensive house primary in the entire history of the United States? Remember the Democrat party leadership frequently donating tens of millions to centrist non-profits whose sole purpose is to get centrist/conservative candidates elected over progressives, and act as a "spoiler" for progressives in the party? Remember Democratic Party leaders infamously going on to work lobbying jobs time and time again when they leave the party? Remember when Obama and the Democrats could have gotten progressive Supreme Court judges in despite Republican opposition, but they just lied down and accepted not doing that in the name of "compromise"? Because I sure remember.

The Democrats constantly, intentionally, pump millions into blue conservatives which they can use to block leftist measures and use as the scapegoats to point to as the reason they couldn't get anything done. They always have a bunch of people to spare to block bills which are "too progressive" that they don't actually want passed. They ARE responsible for this shit.

Leftists have good reason to be absolutely pissed at the party. They know they're the only "left" option, and they abuse the FUCK out of that. Blue Dog Democrats even existing is a sin in and of itself.

Why would the Democrats do this? As with most things wrong with the American democratic process, the reason is lobbying. Corporations lobby the Democrats seemingly just as much as the Republicans to ensure they don't take away too much of their power. Shit's fucked.

The fact that you have the audacity to blame progressives or leftists for being mad at the clear lack of democracy and the messed up stuff the Democratic party does to block important bills & candidates is so fucked up, holy shit. People are starving and dying because of the Democrats actively working against progressives in the party. Them giving us a few crumbs of good does not absolve them of intentionally absolutely fucking us over again and again. The party isn't the friend of progressives, they're just the "only choice". I can only hope that the upcoming elections change that, and we don't just get a dozen more obstructionists who the Dems use to block any vaguely center-left policy.

  • Are you seriously comparing clothing and makeup to skin color and ethnicity my guy?

Blackface demonizes/makes fun of being black. Drag does not demonize femininity; quite the opposite actually. Your logic doesn't logic.

Considering you post a lot of porn of women with objectifying remarks all over your profile, it's unsurprising you have misogynistic views... at least keep them to yourself man.
