  • state controlled media is very bad

Hard disagree: if there's one thing we've seen over the many decades, BBC News for all its various stumbles has done a good job of setting a high bar for all the commercial news TV in the UK.

Just compare it to the absolute trainwreck that is US TV news media. Sky News for example is a Murdoch station just like Fox News, and yet they don't have even a fraction of the amount of crazy on there because the British people have come to expect their news presenters to act like adults and make at least some attempt at impartiality.

Even if you don't like the BBC's output, you still get the benefit from its effect on the independents, and it's not like anyone's forcing you to watch it.

  • That's some weaselly circular argument you're engaging in there.

Your use of the word "just" implies that having people called "citizens" is inherently and self-evidently better than having people called "inhabitants"; which you're then plugging into a proof-by-definition to paper over the fact that you haven't actually made any kind of case for why it's better.

  • Historically speaking passports and border controls have been the exception, not the rule. The reason you can't conceive of it possibly working is you've only ever lived in a world where you need a passport to go somewhere.

The scenario of 100 million people suddenly arriving is FUD. Apart from not being likely even on purely logistical grounds, the questions you're asking are ones that are eminently answerable: Where do they live? In houses that they build. Where would their children go to school? At schools that they build and staff. It's from the same fearmongering stable as "theytookerrrjaawwwbs".

  • LOL, I went to see what the availability was, and it looks like CloudFlare have decided that anyone going to AMC's site from a duckduckgo search for "Melania movie tickets" is probably an attacker.

  • It seems so cartoonishly evil that you don't think it would happen, but I've been around bigger companies long enough to see first-hand that the psychopaths genuinely do get promoted first.

Companies don't deliberately set out to recruit and promote psychopaths, they just have systems in place that happen to reward inhumanity. CEOs that don't increase YoY revenue get fired by their boards, and the fact that it may have been because they were trying to avoid killing babies doesn't enter into the discussion.

  • Funny you mention it, because I was thinking of going back and reading all the Dilbert strips I missed out on after Scott Adams went mask-off racist. Am I allowed?

(edit: LOL, looks like a moot point, I tried going there just now and the server doesn't seem to be running)

  • Now you're doubling down and being a snobby cunt. Looks like I shouldn't have bothered trying to phrase things diplomatically after all. Blocked

  • Posting questions and then complaining that the answers aren’t good enough for you, is what I would, at my most diplomatic, call ungracious behaviour. You had the option of just scrolling past.

  • Capitalism eats itself

  • I think the urban myth part was some of the photos being shared that showed very dramatic results. There was one right here on lemmy that someone posted from the wikipedia page on exploding trees without bothering to read its caption - it that had been destroyed by a lightning strike.

  • My student days:

    Curry Super Noodles

After draining most of the water crack an egg in there and give it a small stir, also add small tin tuna and some frozen sweetcorn

Tip into a bowl and drown in Sweet Chili Sauce

Easy to make, only dirties one pan, has pretty much all the nutrients you need. Corresponds to no known world cuisine so name it whatever you want.

  • 15 years ago I’d have called this a conspiracy theory given how the evidence seems to be anecdotal, but given literally every single other thing we’ve learned in recent times about how cartoonishly evil and lying the tech bros truly are, it seems entirely likely.

  • China was spying on me in case I had any useful state secrets. America is spying on me because they are actively exploiting every data point in my life for profit and control.

  • And yet my LinkedIn is still full of people complaining about how much the EU over-regulates

  • 1000% fake

Stuff like this is guaranteed internet points. Notice how they NEVER give the name of the employer, even though they have no reason not to name them.

  • Sir, this is a cheese shop

  • Video sharing is not a technically difficult problem in 2026. It really is just about making the money work.
