  • Call it caring fatigue. There are causes that I care about and that I spend my time and energy on. But over the course of 2020-2025, every little thing-of-the-week issue that popped up demanded that I stop buying socks at target, or burritos at chipotle, canned beans or pens or video games or cloud services or t-shirts or shoes or plastic cups or what have you. I just don't have it in me to pretend to care about everything that everybody else cares about all the time. I'm picking my 2-3 things and sticking with them

  • It's an internet thing. There's a lot of people online who code but have no jobs. 4chan's /dpt/ is full of them. They all code in ANSI C or Lisp or something

  • When I work on web projects at home I don't use any javascript at all. Just html and css. Interactions are handled via form submission. I'm working on a forum in asp.net mvc without any javascript at all

  • Straight up though the world peaked in the 2007-2010 in terms of culture. Everything has just gotten significantly worse since then and I feel bad for the zoomers and gen alpha who have to grow up in the 2020s

  • At work everything I do is in the Javascript/Web world. Typescript backend, webpack react, etc. I use C++ and C# for personal projects because I personally despise Javascript world

  • Im not an evangelist for windows (I won't try to convert you) but I'm unashamed of being a software engineer who uses Windows as my main dev platform

  • Hi I like Windows, I use it as my primary development platform

  • I have literally never seen whatever this post is referring to

  • .ml should be defederated from lemmy.world tbh

  • Windows has a terminal now too!

  • Recently I've started working on coding a forum. I want to add in all the classic features of early 2000s/early 2010s forums like PhPBB and such. The goal would be to have no javascript at all

  • I curse the sadist who decided True should be uppercase in Python

  • I'm also a software engineer and I can't stand most other people in this field. I got into this field because I love computers and was tweaking garry's mod scripts when I was 12. I read scifi books and enjoy reading about the lore of the tech industry.

I would estimate that AT LEAST 75% of people in this industry are ladder climbing yuppies who got into it for the money. The gym rat, tesla-driving podcaster types who have invented their own language about syncing up, achieving alignment, creating action items and eating dog food. And for some reason they're all into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Lex Fridman/Joe Rogan

I do not socialize with my coworkers because they are the most obnoxious fucking money-obsessed pieces of shit I've ever met

  • Do older technical people use 1:1 chat? I would think email is more common
