  • I wish i knew more about the guts of LLMs because I keep thinking it must be easier to optimize them than to put data centers into space.

  • “Punk rockers” was definitely a thing. I read “punker” as a shortening of that.

  • I see - so you’re arguing with the Republican premise that safety features add cost. It seems obvious that more features will add some cost, but how much is the question. The number of lives saved is also pretty important to understanding that cost, I would add.

Naturally the GOP are trying to deflect general economic outrage at Democrats and “nanny state” regulators any way they can.

  • It will come with an optional $400 fork that does nothing.

  • Electric cars are still kinda expensive because they are new, and not yet the majority. But wow they are going to be so much cheaper in the long run. Fewer parts and easier maintenance. It’s surprising how much longer something lasts when it doesn’t need to contain numerous miniature explosions per second.

  • There a similar effect with Mercedes in the US: they mainly export their high-end cars here, not their economy cars. Therefore Americans associate the entire brand with rich assholes. It’s true enough within the US, but may not hold outside it.

  • You can argue with the evidence if you want to but it is offered right there, at the top of the article.

NHTSA says have saved 860,000 lives since 1968.

  • Yeah. Right wing positions are wrong enough without the constant, panicky extremification of them that goes on. It’s not really persuasive to anyone when we distort these positions and then crow about how bad they are. It’s all just part of the outrage-engagement complex that is rapidly rotting all our brains.

  • The concept of a global language is compatible with linguistic diversity. The Elves, Orcs, and Dwarves all have their own languages, but they also speak the same Common Tongue.

Our world just doesn’t have a common tongue. It has a handful of very colonially dominant languages.

  • That’s the utilitarian point of view. Even though I often take this POV on many subjects, it would be totalitarian to apply it to cultural matters. Should we adopt one world cuisine that is the easiest to work with? Should we settle everyone on one musical scale and religion, too? It would be a lot more efficient and would facilitate global interaction better.

Only problem: it would erase who we are.

  • I’m just guessing what they meant but I took it as the difference between:

    1. saving = getting enough people to keep speaking it that it remains a living language
    2. preserving = documenting it for posterity so that it is not utterly forgotten for all time
  • The US military is highly distributed throughout the world. Other countries can stop allowing us to have bases on their soil and it will significantly weaken our military posture. They dont need to invade the US to do this.

  • I can only imagine with his audience size what his team looks like right now. I’m sure they aren’t content with standard YT revenue and are always looking for ways to turn his massive fame into more dollars. They cover a lot of silly expensive high end shit like Rivians and Apple Vision. It’s not crazy to think that they could milk the rich fools for a buck. Believe it or not there are people who think to themselves “Hm, interesting. $50? Okay, that’s nothing, I’ll check it out.”

  • You’re right that is demented in a way only he can achieve. Though he might just be asking what the spelling is as both his examples are homonyms.

He’s got this childish obsession with “what’s hot” and “what people are talking about” and he thinks we all do. He’ll offer some gen like this one with little bites of social proof like “everyone’s talking about it” like that should be enough to convince us of its veracity and importance. Just so dumb.

  • True. I was commenting on the comic, which isn’t Islam-specific necessarily.

  • It makes me feel very low to think about this but there is little doubt that he has completely changed and taken ownership of the Republican Party, and is likely define it for decades to come. Like Ronald Reagan did. Trump has done it all in the lowest, most despicable way, and his ego is boundless, but objectively, his brand has been extremely effective. Any one of us here would LOVE to go out and reshape the Democratic Party with as much success as Trump has with his.

  • I love this comic and very much agree with the spirit of it. I am also fully in favor of diversity and immigration into the US.

It is also interesting to know that “non-Hispanic whites” are in fact expected to become a minority in 2045 according to demographic projections by the US Census Bureau.

I hate white panic in all its forms but as a matter of factual accuracy, we can’t lampoon it as freaking out over 2 people in 10 not being white. It’s further along than that, at least nationally. Granted, in any particular room, some white people will still freak out over 2 in 10.

  • “Taking over” has to start somewhere LOL /s

  • And it makes dumb people so visible.
