  • I loved the original Black & White way back in the day but I never really clicked with his other games, even Fable.

I just remember the mini documentary that Tech TV had on him that they would repeat over and over. and even way back then he was getting called out on his over promising for his games. like the original Fable was a fraction of what he promised it would be.

  • before I made the switch to Linux I never used a terminal. never. hell on Windows I even used a GUI for Git. I used sublime text as my IDE. if it wasn't a GUI I was lost.

Then I switched to Linux and it forced me to actually sit down and learn the terminal and now...now I have a hard time using GUI's. If something has a CLI or TUI option then I go for that over a GUI. like everything even my music player and video player. my IDE of choice now is DOOM Emacs. my file manager is Yazi. for Git I either use lazygit or just straight up the command line. but for everything else it's just so much faster and in the long run easier to just use the terminal.

All that being said if you like GUI's then hey more power to you and that's fine. that's the beauty of Linux. you run your system how you want to and don't let others tell you otherwise. Hell I know a guy that uses NixOS and doesn't have anything installed other than git and comma. he runs everything via comma. literally everything.

  • wait you have to verify your grades...from high school!?

shit I'd turn it around on them and say "I could verify my grades from high school for you but first I'd like you to verify how you believe every update you release won't some how break a majority of users Ubuntu installs"

  • shit at this point Bondi could walk into a committee hearing, hold up a puppy, douse it in gasoline, light it on fire, and the Democrats would just ask her to stop then say "I think she did something illegal just now, I think so."

Where were those charges that Ro Khanna was "drafting" up in December against her? Where's the impeachment? why wasn't she held in contempt yesterday?

She lashed out at them yesterday simply because she knew she could and there would be zero repercussions. and then AFTER the whole dog and pony show several democrat politicians were damn ready to make sure they got their soundbites in about it.

it's embarrassing. Bondi should be behind bars right now and I'm damn tired of Democrats telling me, daily, that these people are breaking the law and they're doing jack shit all against them.

  • so basically King is losing this weekend and we're not going to see him for a very long time OR he's going to be regulated to RoH. great. thanks WBD.

Honestly the best thing that could happen to AEW at this point is getting off of TNT/TBS. I mean we had the whole Jay Brisco, The Rascalz, and Now this.

  • pretty much. you'll see it first hand with the vibe coding shit. sure the basics will work but none of it will scale, it'll be full of exploits, and just garbage all around. But most people simply don't know better and trust whatever the LLM spits out.

I mean people hail Claude as the best out there but if you know any better and you've spent any time with it then you'd know it's 100% useless. not a single solution it spits out these days is correct. and Claude Code has become noticeably worse.

  • that's fine. ChatGPT is 100 times easier to quit and forget about than Facebook. ChatGPT serves zero benefit for most people in their daily lives. It's extremely easy to stop using a tool that constantly hallucinates solutions.

  • I use DOOM Emacs. is it potentially a bit of overkill? sure. but it's got all the plugins I need, built in terminal, built in git tui, built in file manager, and depending on what i'm writing web dev stuff in it automatically sets up a sort of basic bootstrap for me.

Yes there is a bit of a learning curve but honestly I just don't bother using anything else now.

    Kate is also great.

  • with ChatGPT you can tell it to behave in certain ways. With Claude it'll just start mimicking you.

  • welp there ya go! problem solved.

  • sure they're leaving but...where? what's a viable alternative?

I mean if I had it my way everyone would just go back to IRC, I still use IRC. it's great, nothings changed, it's perfect. combine that with like mumble or teamspeak and you're good to go.

I checked out Stoat lastnight and it's very slow. took well over an hour to get a verification email (I assume because many others were signing up) and the current server offerings are minimal. Also a good majority of the themes listed simply don't work. it's growing and I'd say it's the best alternative right now but it's not there yet and I worry it or the various instances of it could hold up if there was a massive Discord exodus.

Matrix is a no and xmpp ain't much better.

  • potentially. it's going to become more of the norm as more nations enforce stuff like this to "protect the kids" coughget your id and know what you're doing onlinecough

Also keep in mind Discord is just about to launch their IPO in March so the timing lines up.

  • they do. desperately. it's been stated for awhile now.

  • doubt it. better off just setting up channels in libera chat on IRC and doin voice via teamspeak/mumble like we used to do it back in the day.

shit, someone needs to bring back ICQ.

  • early internet "culture" to a younger person. They didn't get it.

In today's online world you openly post your photo online, where you're from, what you do, etc and anyone can see it. I had to explain to them that back then (late 90s/early 00s) posting your photo or real name online was a no-no. it was actively discouraged. But then in turn because of the way you primarily communicated with people online either via IRC, forums, ICQ, AOL IM, etc you kinda had a closer relationship with these people even if you didn't know what they looked like or what their names were.

Also the fact that in most cases a lot of people simply couldn't put their photos online either because they didn't have access to a scanner or a digital camera. I told them that one of my best friends online that I would talk to daily I still to this day have no idea what they looked like.

  • In Canada the government was providing something like close to $3000 per person during the pandemic if they had lost their job or were unable to work due to covid on the condition you pay it back. many people ripped off the program, many people didn't pay it back, government has kinda been mute on the whole thing since then. Guy I knew got it twice and could argue he didn't need it (he was a POS). never paid it back, didn't hear a peep from the government and still hasn't. continues to pay his taxes annnnnnd nothing, no one has ever come calling to collect.

Another thing is during the pandemic we were putting homeless individuals in hotel rooms for months on end. we paid for it. we "suddenly" were able to find them housing. People were working from home remember that? nothing collapsed, companies continued doing well. Then suddenly the pandemic ends and now for whatever reason we no longer have housing for the homeless, we can no longer put them in those hotel rooms, and we're forcing people to return to work. We no longer have money for anything?

it's not that we didn't learn anything, the people sure as fuck did learn something, It's just that there's more money to be made by the powers that be going back to the "old ways".

  • what do Kid Rock and the Homeless have in common? both are "banned" in California.
