Republicans in particular don't give a shit about something until it affects them or their family/friends/ingroup.
So far the horrors of the last year haven't actually directly affected that many Americans. Or it's abstract enough that it's easy for people (mostly morons, which we have a crazy number of) not to connect the dots.
When people start getting drafted in significant numbers, that'd actually have impact.
A rapid economic downturn would do a whole lot more.
"Some adult needs to come fix my problems for me" seems to be super common these days. It's partly why the US is in the state it's in, but certainly not limited to the US.
