  • Well it depends, there’s certainly an argument for like, the original CPU. I’m personally fine with emulation tbh, I do think someone maintaining the hardware is good for archival but I don’t have the space or funds for a bunch of the consoles I grew up with and either a CRT or expensive ass hdmi mods (which is another point of debate I suppose) but I like installing them for people and fixing old consoles is surprisingly lucrative, especially if you “Cadillac them up” with this stuff (assuming you can still find them cheap, which is incredibly difficult nowadays)

But changing the psu? That’s a no brainer. Functionality remains identical and the modern designs are superior because they simply couldn’t have existed 30+ years ago. Components have improved a lot in terms of efficiency since then and as a result the modern designs are much smaller and generate far less heat and ripple (two biggest factors for longevity). Using the original power supply just means stressing the motherboard more which is counterproductive if your goal is keeping the machine running as long as possible. The exception would be if you got a bad modern replacement, like if you designed your own poorly or pulled the trigger on an unknown one and did 0 testing. Repsx (and the associated other systems under the same name) are well designed and made.

  • Check output voltages on the power supply with motherboard disconnected

If there’s anything weird there honestly I would just look into something like this . There are other versions iirc and you can find it cheaper too but basically a drop in psu replacement that uses modern components.

People are talking about recapping and fixing the power supply. It’s honestly not worth it on many of these older systems unless you’re a die hard that insists the hardware be 100% original. You’ll spend 30-50% of the cost of a replacement psu on a recap kit and that might not fix it (I am a big believer that recapping for no reason is a bad idea, especially on old pcbs like this that can easily delaminate). When you factor in potential extra time spent diagnosing and fixing the actual problem (bc it’s probably not recapping) plus the fact that the modern psu will last longer and deliver cleaner power, protecting the motherboard and allowing it to last longer as well, it’s a no brainer imo.

If the issue is on the motherboard then sorry. It’s usually fixable, but harder. This gen of console is an okay place to start learning if you ever wanted to (though what you describe with the whine sounds like psu issues imo). Previous 2 gens are a bit easier tho

  • Is it any different than the prior released “whole bloody affair” aside from the fortnite cash in tagged ongoing the end? If not (or even if so, can’t be that different), pirate it. There’s definitely plenty of 1080p bluray rips of the whole bloody affair available and everyone involved in that production who would make money off of a sale/stream is more than financially comfortable so piracy is morally correct. Plus then you don’t support Zionism and epics digital addiction machine to extract money from children

  • There is that but it’s primarily that they’ve taken over 40 million dollars of venture capital. They are almost certainly under immense pressure to turn profitable asap and converting lifetime pass users into revenue streams somehow, converting new users into SaaS, etc are going to be things they pursue more aggressively.

Don’t take the devils money if you don’t want the devils stipulations

  • Reddit was the playground for ai slop long before commercial LLMs existed. Subredditsimulator was like 2014 or 2015 and people were fucking with markov chains and other shit that dated back to like the 90s or even 70s but that also had some people experimenting with rudimentary neural networks, though obviously none with the computing power of shit like chatgpt or gemini. And obviously that whole experiment was inspired in part by the fact that botted comments were becoming increasingly common and obvious on reddit in the years leading to it, so why not make a subreddit where everyone participating is a bot?

There’s no proof but openai researchers may have been fucking around on that sub. There was a fairly drastic increase in quality of posts in that sub around the time openai would’ve been making gpt1 (2018ish) and then they began aggressively scraping the entirety of reddit, quora, etc for content. Could just be a coincidence though and they’ll never confirm it even if it’s true bc redditors will flip shit

  • Listen I’m not gonna judge you if you buy a $700 chair. But as an alternative to consider I bought this $100 ikea desk chair. Mine is white and they appear to not make the color option anymore which is a shame because I think it’s pretty sharp:

Mine still looks pretty good but seeing some used ones on ebay makes me think they discontinued this color because it gets gross pretty fast. Anyway I’ve had it for at least 5-6 years, maybe more. I use it every day and I work from home. Is it the comfiest chair? Nah, I’m sure some Herman miller $900 shit would be much better. But it keeps me off of the ground.

And for what it’s worth I’m somewhat older (late 30s) with a history of back and neck issues (spent my 20s working in jobs that resulted in moderate and severe back and neck injuries). Also as others have said go sit in it, this is why ikea is nice if you live near one

  • Proprietary formats should be illegal. Consumers are idiots, marketing will convince them to support proprietary, and regulatory capture will compromise any attempt to stop disparity

  • I think whether mass shooters are mentally ill is debatable on a case by case basis, some obviously yes, some less obviously.

But what I’m saying is this point is moot because even if 100% of mass shooters are “mentally ill” and that is the driving force behind their culpability the individuals saying “we need better mental health care in this country” in the wake of gun violence are so full of shit and obviously using the topic for misdirection with no intention for meaningful change. This is clearly evidenced by the fact that mental health services have been systematically defunded year after year for decades, very often by the same individuals who clamor the same.

  • I’m torn on the idea of arming leftists in the current climate. I don’t disagree with you there. I live in a somewhat rural area that is heavy Trump and the right wingers are heavily armed. I don’t blame a trans person for arming themselves to defend themselves in an area like this, and my post history reflects as much.

That said there is a difference between arming yourself and actively contributing to increasing the amount of arms in the world. And what made it interesting is you claimed this is an ethical and moral issue. If your friend worked to only arm leftists that would be an interesting take. I doubt this is the case though. I am assuming they are like any capitalist based on your first line - anyone’s money is good enough.

To answer your question as others have said the hammer has a utilitarian purpose, as do knives, as does dynamite. With the exception of something like skeet shooting guns sole purpose is to rob the consciousness of a living being. I do not believe that the sport outweighs the risk. There are far less dangerous ways to hunt, we’ve banned things like lawn darts for less when the danger outweighs the utility. America just has a raging hard on for guns because of military fetishism

  • No, I think systemic issues need to be addressed of course. But I think in America, as someone who has worked in mental health for decades, the use of “mental health” in the wake of large scale violence is exclusively a scapegoat because there has almost never been meaningful action behind it. Overwhelmingly in almost (if not) all states since 2008 mental health programs have seen massive budgetary cuts year after year after year.

And this begets the point that “mental health” is a weasel word for treating systemic issues. Frankly even if you increased the budgets of Medicaid and community mental health programs 10 fold I don’t believe mass shootings would be impacted much in terms of rate. The systemic issues that create these conditions - wealth inequality, racism, quality education access, quality healthcare access, etc would essentially all remain and take generations to resolve even if you forced fixes tonight. The rot goes deep. Almost any therapist who works in community mental health programs will tell you that most of their clientele suffer more from lack of resources than mental health disorders

  • what a stupid mindset. Show me a time someone managed to kill 20-50 people in a span of 15-30 minutes with a bow, let alone a knife, let alone a laymen that didn’t have military training.

As an aside the goal does not have to be to solve the problem definitively. It can be to make the problem markedly better. If mass shootings with body counts in the above turned into mass stabbings, which are obviously traumatic and horrible but typically have fatalities in the single digits (often only 1-2), is that not a tremendous improvement? It is of course still very worthwhile to address systemic factors that lead to violence, but making violence less severe is worthwhile as well.

  • At the moment of death you make a gurgling sound (unless you get like, splattered or whatever) and then it suddenly goes black like the end of the sopranos because your consciousness shuts off. Well it’s not really that, it’s inconceivable, it’s nothingness, it returns to the state prior to being born. Your consciousness is not magic or mystical, it’s merely an illusory byproduct of very high quality stimulus processing and extremely intricate nervous system for sensory input coupled with the capacity for short and long term memory. There is no magic moment of reconciliation unless self induced through social conditioning (eg religious guilt) and people like Trump and musk ultimately win by having a life of hedonistic excess with no repercussions while the rest of us slave away for a half day off and an aliexpress trinket here and there.

(sorry for spoiling a show that ended 18 years ago)

  • “He has good morals and ethics”

How could he possibly if he has devoted his life to creating weapons? What’s his response if and when his guns are used for violence, be it murder, suicide, armed robbery, etc? Even if he is “small time” for “enthusiasts” of the “sport” it is only a matter of time until this occurs. How does he reconcile this? That it’s not the guns fault? Just the glamorization of them, the obscene amount of them, the fact that they are readily available, pushing it onto “mental health”, or some other scapegoat that allows him to escape accountability for facilitating mortal violence.

I hope your friend goes out business and his entire industry collapses.

  • Even macos spotlight knows to prioritize system apps over web searches and such. Iirc it’s like if the query exists as a system app that will be the top result, if two system apps share the query the most recent result selected will win (eg typed “ter” and last used terminal that will be the autocomplete and top choice but if you also have an app called like terminex or something you can down key to it), and web results are only if queries have no match in the spotlight db for files, contacts, etc (which would be in the match list after system apps. I don’t know what the hierarchy is but there is one iirc). So if you type in “phantom menace” and have no apps, files, contacts, etc matching that it’ll prompt to query google.

What you describe is far greater in functionality (and of course spotlight doesnt have plugin support, though it can be outright replaced at least (for now)) but it’s absolutely insane microsoft is going this way with ad nonsense. It’s just disrespectful and greedy. Who is even left using desktop OS anymore? It’s like power users and office workers. The power users are gonna switch to linux or m series macbooks (which doesn’t rule out linux). So is this just a play to get the administrative assistants and other office drones of the world to become a captive audience they can sell?

  • Plenty of people on here who can’t be bothered to read past the first 8 words of a comment because their brain is so rotted by tiktok and browsing reddit by all to only read the headlines.

  • If given a chance they will kill. To obtain that level of wealth one generally has to have a sociopathic level of lack of empathy. Maybe not all are like Trump and itching to blow people up and put people to death. A lot are probably less actively bloodthirsty (thankfully) but at the same time have no issue taking away your health insurance, your income, your housing, etc if it impacts their bottom line even though they already have enough resources to last 100,000,000 lifetimes in extreme excess.

“Oh but if they let these things change they would lose their wealth” exactly - when it comes down to it, they would rather leave you to die than risk losing their obscene wealth. So this is violence, and therefore violence is an appropriate response, especially when the state continually and repeatedly fails over decades (arguably from its inception) to rein them in.

  • this I will always agree with 100%. I’m fine with a game that is hard but not everyone is like me and was lucky enough to be gifted with the hand eye coordination and motor skills that I take for granted. I’m reminded of that every fucking time I play a fromsoft game and end up having to install a mod for large type in the menus, because GOD FORBID someone want to play the game who has poor vision.

And then you get banned from online leaderboards because you had the gall to install a mod that made it so you could actually read context menus and shit. Fuck your vision. Your vision sucks if I can’t actually see it. And frankly I think the vast majority of devs don’t give a shit about adding such features; they’re not prioritized because of the cost:benefit analysis being lackluster. “spending $x dollars on dev time for $y dollars in additional sales, if the projection shows adding accessibility will generally lead to X>Y, why bother?” Kind of thing. But then the worst people ever, culture warrior /v/ trash, latch on to make excuses for the bean counters.
