  • Goes in waves and based on vendor. My build is based on 18tb drives and 6 months ago when a drive in my array failed my go to vendor (serverpartdeals) had no stock in that capacity. Like 0 units. Had to use my backup vendor (go hard drive) who in my experience is slightly more expensive.

Looking now spd has 18tb back in stock with several models to choose from. 10tb too but much less options (literally 2). Prices are wack nowadays - in 2023 I could get a refurb 18tb exos drive for $180 and now it’s $270-290. Fucking wild and I’m glad I built up my array when I did. It’s generally the cheapest decent option in that capacity; goharddrive has some cheaper options (Toshiba for $230, unaware of statistics for that drive, MDD for $260, rebranded exos drives so a slightly better deal but still way over 2023 prices).

That all said my array is 15 refurb drives and has been going for like 7 years now. Drive failure rate is low, 3 failures in that time. 2 drives was replaced by seagate with a brand new drive bc the spd drive still had mfr warranty left. The 3rd was an HGST that didn’t have mfr warranty but did have spd warranty and they replaced it immediately with an equivalent drive (they didn’t have more HGST at the time). That said I do worry seeing times where they are literally wiped out of stock; if I need a drive replacement I need it asap and if they have nothing on hand does that mean they hold none back for warranty replacements? Sure hope not.

Struggle to recommend them now though because the prices aren’t worthwhile. A new 18tb exos is 280-290 on amazon. Why the fuck would you buy a refurb when a new drive is only $20 more or the same price???

  • IMO you go to him and ask politely for him to knock it off or shut the door.

If he doesn’t then you go again and gently remind him, restating the boundary and saying something like “this is a shared workspace. If you can’t respect other people’s needs then I will need to discuss this with a mediator” or whatever.

    Then escalate as appropriate.

Keep in mind some of this is on him and some of this is on you. Whistling, singing, shouting out? Bad form on his part.

“Stapling papers at full power”? Yawning? Honestly, even just saying “well!”? People exist and make noise friend, welcome to the hell of an open office, maybe get some headphones or loops if you’re that sensitive to noise?

On one hand excessive noise is unacceptable and should be reprimanded. On the other hand some noise here and there is inherent to a shared office space. Figuring out which is which is within the scope of hr so maybe tag them in but always keep in mind their ultimate purpose is to protect the company

  • Pretty crazy how many apps can just be a spreadsheet and somehow end up monetized because for some reason the spreadsheet needs to be on the cloud.

What if you lose your history of poop data? How did people live before knowing every time they pooped

  • In 30-50 years we will maybe say this about stunted emotional development due to endocrine disruption from microplastics, or maybe social-behavioral disruption thanks to dopamine gaming from social media especially for youth, constant digital stimulation, pfas, ultra fine air particulate pollution, or whatever.

The point is the harm is happening still but we don’t care because much like when tobacco was becoming clear as a public health crisis. Or using your example like how it was fairly clear leaded gas had neurotoxic effects in like the 1920s almost immediately after they started using it because it kept destroying the brains of the gas factory workers, then they spent like 30 years studying it and basically finding atmospheric lead pollution increases as well as blood level concentration increases from engine exhaust.

But in both cases regulators drug their feet for decades while people literally died because god forbid they harm profits of companies to protect the public health and safety. We have some very clear ideas of what needs to be acted on now but we don’t because god forbid google be valued at 2.7 trillion dollars instead of 2.98 trillion

  • From my understanding depending on industry and geographic area “Arthur” is correct.

When I do counseling with younger people who have graduated school recently or whatever over the last 2 years or so this seems to be the situation for those that get 60-80k jobs. The search itself is an insane grind.

I graduated college in 2008 and it wasn’t even this bad then. It took hundreds of applications over 6-8 months but not thousands over 12-18 which is what I’m seeing now from people.

It’s that bit where as a counselor sometimes I get people who are like “it was hopeless so I just gave up” and I’m like “well, yeah, makes sense”. Like you can only grind so hard before the system breaks you

  • Well now there’s oled so burn in is very much a thing and screensavers are back on TVs at least, except they suck now.

And I would definitely call modern computers stupid but it’s not the computers fault, tbf. A computer is just a thing. It’s the fault of greed mainly. Computers are stupid because they don’t have charming features like screensavers anymore. That’s too expensive. Usability, repairability, user control, etc is sacrificed consistently to shove in advertising and opportunities for upselling. Whenever this isn’t the case it’s almost always a temporary moment before venture capital purchases the company that makes the hardware/software and then they will 100% do that

  • I don’t know why people think ice using this is strange because many local police departments in the USA have been using this thing for decades for anyone even slightly unruly. It’s supposed to be a last resort mechanical restraint if someone is a true danger but if you watch those youtube bodycam videos you’ll regularly see them throw this out as a threat and use it retributively when someone pisses them off. Of course ice would also use it and would likely use it in even worse ways

  • Sleep disorder, catch up on work, shitpost, read manga. I try to do productive stuff too like exercise, language study, making stuff, etc but I do have to be contentious of noise as I live with people. Some things are easier than others. Language study is nice because 5am est is 6pm the next day jst so my Japanese language exchange friends are just getting home from work when I’m getting to the end of the night

Thankfully I’ve gotten to the point in life where I can work like 11-7 or 12-8 fairly easily. Brutal for social interaction at my age is the trade off but can’t win them all I guess

  • I do. It was great.

Many years later Uniqlo released the uniqlock. It was a clock screensaver that had “seasons” which were advertisements for their seasonal clothing releases but it wasn’t really obvious? It was that era where advertising was stupid and weird and “subversive” but it meant we got a cool screensaver that was updated for like 6 years with new content for free. Normally I despise advertising but this was the kind that was up front about it: it was like here’s a thing, check it out, it’s free, no data collection. Simpler times.

Unfortunately it was made in flash and died many years ago when flash was kill. That hasn’t stopped people who were also fans of it from recreating it although unfortunately said site doesn’t work great on mobile and is a website, not a screensaver, but still nice to be able to see it again

  • The dvd screensaver was just another screensaver at the time. There used to be cool things. Like install windows 95 or 98 and there’s default screensavers that were basically just programmers showing off - the pipes constantly growing into each other, a starfield, a generative maze that you just wander through, etc. then there was a whole thing for people to make screensavers (Uniqlo made one of the coolest ones).

Now computers are stupid and monitors just turn off. To be fair this is probably better for the environment

  • That’s old dumb usb. USB c also needs a 5.1kohm resistor between cc1 and gnd (or data lines to negotiate fast charging but then its a whole thing)

Ytlite now, uyou stopped updating awhile ago. There’s also a fork of ytlite (I think ytlite+?) that has some plugins rolled in by default, though you can just roll them in yourself when you build the app. The plus version may be better if you get them prebuilt from an appstore (sketch, imo) instead of sideloading an app you build yourself

  • Cool that the independent links directly to patriots.win now

  • I used a pi for HA for years with no issue. Just use a good quality legitimate sd card and make regular backups of your setup

I use a cheap NUC now but that is about processing overhead mainly due to rtsp streams. If you have a setup like mine (10+ cameras, 4k streams) you’ll find it starts to get unusable and chokes after a certain number of streams (iirc like 5-6). This is exacerbated if you bridge the streams to homekit or stuff like that (though not as much if you do something like scrypted external to the pi obviously but then it’s like what do you run that on?)
