  • The remedy for piracy should never be punitive on the consumer, or it does exactly what happened to you. Even more ironic your story is probably encouraging others to pirate rather than have a discouraging effect on the market by 'making an example of you'.

Great job as usual, Nintendo management 🎉

  • 20 years, ~2000 dead civilians by direct action, over 26,000 dead kids during rhe conflict, and ~10k dead 'militants*' in Afghanistan and $2.3 trillion spent.

All to replace the Taliban with.. the Taliban.

Largely thanks to Trump's rapid, unplanned withdrawal.

The shart of the deal, baby.

*includes post-mortem labelling of boys as young as 12 as 'militant' simply by being in the vicinity of a US airstrike. Military gear, insignia, uniform etc nor any other evidence required for determination.

  • I didn't downvote, but probably because they're a young USA-based search engine that requires login to use - which is usually a huge red flag for privacy, and their privacy of user searches is claimed but has never been verified by any kind of audit - another significant red flag.

Why trust another for-profit Palo-Alto search company with your search data, assist their (potential) tracking by logging in, and pay for it in the process?

  • I've never seen ads and I use the usual free TeraCopy at home. Are there supposed to be ads? (I don't have a pihole or anything that'd be blocking the ads at the network level)

  • 97% was reported by earlier small surveys, but I think the most rigorous and widely reported survey of scientists was Harris Interactive in 2007.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_consensus_on_climate_change#2005%E2%80%932009

That was followed up in 2010 by a survey of specifically climate scientists, whom hit 97-98%.

The 'concensus' has been constantly challenged in conservative media and circles so there have been many such surveys / meta-analyses continuing over the years and it's been hitting 100% for the last several years. If any idiot ever parrots "science doesn't work on concensus" my usually response is something like, "no it doesn't, but when an entire field of scientists have determined a theory to have vast evidence-based backing its considered settled. The only thing that would change that is significant contradictory data being presented, yet instead every year we're measuring huge volumes of data that confirm the concensus."

  • A Chromecast is not full of ads, but are they all just Google TV now? Is Google TV full of ads? I haven't used one.

Could be an option to reset your TV, disconnect it from the Internet, and buy & use a Google TV device instead. The streaming devices seem to have far fewer ads and shit than TV manufacturers cram into their devices nowadays.

The hoops we have to jump through to minimise surveillance capitalism.. I see elsewhere in the thread you've had to use a PiHole to block most of the TVs traffic.

  • I'm guessing hes copying the Arc de Triomphe simply because he hasn't seen the Brandenburger Tor.

I wonder when he's gonna approach Hugo Boss for new uniforms for the Secret Service.

  • I see..

  • You made me curious. I can't find solid numbers on attacks/deaths per capita, but last year a indigenous Arakun (far north Queensland) fisherman was killed and only confirmed by DNA testing his remains in the Croc.

In 2024 two people were killed, a 12yo girl in NT (Northern Territory) and a 40yo man in Cooktown, Queensland.

The US also seems to have 1-2 annual alligator deaths, but considering our demographics difference (Aus 28.2m, USA 342m), Australia has over ten times as many deaths by large reptile per capita.

BTW all of Northern Aus is where the crocs are, and there are 'Absolutely no swimming' signs everywhere, but it's hot as fuck up there and fishing and boating are very popular pasttimes so it is hard to keep the people and the crocs out of each other's territory. I imagine it's similar in the Southeast US?

  • Us making glorious wildlife films like Rogue (2007) is certainly not helping haha.

Recommended btw if you like a bit of horror and don't mind dumb movies like The Meg, Deep Blue Sea.
  • When you have to go back 132 years (Hawaii) and 128 years (Puerto Rico) to find a whataboutism you can throw back in a commenter's face - it's probably not very contributory to the conversation.

  • I think Bernie is using the term "consequential" very carefully here. He doesnt mean its the most transformative, impactful technology ever. He means it's the one that's going to have the most negative consequences for people - and I think it has the internet beat there.

But, its certainly arguable. 'Ai' and 'the internet' are really both a large collection of technologies bundled into one umbrella terb, and there are positive, benign, and negative components within both.

I don't ever remember people making 'fuck the internet' clubs back when it was gaining steam in 97/98 though..

  • Apparently it's just as bad if not worse for most other mass-produced beverages, including glass-bottled (https://www.sciencenewstoday.org/glass-bottles-shed-more-microplastics-than-plastic-ones-surprising-french-study-finds) and aluminium-canned (which are all lined with plastic). In fact of the three, ironically plastic bottles were found to shed the fewest microplastics in this study: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0301479724037964

So buying things in glass or converting to cans makes no significant difference, and may make it worse. Plastic is everywhere in the manufacturing process (linings, filters, tubes, pipes). Soda and beer will not allow you to escape the microplastics problem.

If we could fast-forward to after the ground-shaking study that proves without a doubt that its incredibly bad for us, to the eventual 'plastic-free' manufacturing certifications that spring from it, that'd be swell. I'm thirsty.
