    Wish it wasn't how things go but it do be.

  • Thanks for the reminder to watch Bab5. It's been on the backlog for ages. Might be time.

  • What?

    He removed corruption from the Klingon government after becoming Chancellor, and held the job for at least 5 years and was well regarded.. circa 2380.

    The Klingon Empire continued for another 600 years until The Burn in the 31st century.

    What kind of measure of success is this? A political action has to endure for all time or it failed?

    Nb: for those of us who don't enjoy Kurtzman Trek and dismiss it, its still going.

  • Star Trek has left Netflix, so what is it even for now?

  • I can think of Batgirl (~2022) off the top of my head. Which cost $90mil and completed, but shelved to write it off as a huge tax loss with Hollywood accounting no doubt inflating the numbers everywhere.

    What's interesting is that it cost as much as their success story 'Sinners (2025)' which was also predicted to be a box office flop by many industry insiders, yet went on to success. So who knows... they may have tossed a hit for a tax write off.

    Wile E Coyote movie too, I'm really hoping that eventually surfaces because it was produced by James Gunn and had a bunch of talented people involved. Will Forte, who's humour I really enjoy:

    "When I first heard that our movie was getting 'deleted' I hadn't seen it yet, so I was thinking what everyone else must have been thinking: this thing must be a hunk of junk. But then I saw it. And it's incredible."

  • This article is all over the place.

    The author points out from the outset that Warner Brothers has been a disaster for both creatives and profiteers under Zaslav for the last 5 years; he's a wrecking ball of man and his friends (personal and political) paint a picture of a piece of shit.

    It then points out that equally huge (or hugher?) piece of shit David Ellison had made a hostile takeover bid for Warner Bros to merge it with Paramount, which would be assisted by his pals Trump and Kushner, which he quickly moves on from without mentioning that it would definitely be bad for the future of cinema, and media competition creating a huge media conglomerate.

    Next there's some Netflix history which is more than a little slanted towards the Hollywood elitist, and the Netflix CEO (Sarandos) is painted as the bad guy for pointing out that cinema is dying because everyone has pretty good, large TVs and fast internet nowadays and the cinema is expensive as fuck. Only to state that these statements "are misleading"... but then back it up with.. Agreeing?

    The theatrical industry is dominated by oversize multiplexes that program bad movies, charge too much money, and are in inconvenient malls and suburban lots that can only be reached by car.

    But what Sarandos fails to say is that legacy Hollywood studios like Warner Bros. are largely responsible for creating this paradigm.

    Like.. If your counterargument to Sarandos's statements about the cinema industry dying is "yeah well only by most metrics and you're twisting it because it's largely Warner Bros fault" that is a terribly counter-argument.

    Even more baffling is the claim:

    Warner Bros., for its part, has managed to find continued success with theatrical releases, both blockbuster franchises (the DC universe) {and two small budget indie films that turned into hits and tripled their budgets, for a business nonetheless still bleeding profits}

    The DC Universe is WB's leading success story? The universe with famously more flops than box office winners??

    I agree with his assessments that the buyout and merger will be bad for cinemas, competition, are likely in breech of antitrust laws, and I agree with his assessment that the companies should be broke up - but the meat of this article feels like it's so out of touch with reality.

    In reality, antitrust will not happen - Trump hates regulations and he loves bribes, so one of three things will happen. And if the choice is between Zaslav continuing to fuck WB, Ellison buying out and merging it with Paramount, or Netflix absorbing WB.. The least-shit choice to me is obvious.

  • If you're worried that this may have hit your PC I'd say first of all be aware that this is a state-level backdoor, intended to be persistent and evade detection. You are likely not the target and are very unlikely to find any evidence even if you were targeted, as it is capable of clearing its tracks.

    Actions I'd suggest if you're still worried this could have hit your PC:

    1. Grab the list of Indicators of compromise from the bottom of this article. Disconnect the PC from the Internet now that you have the list.
    2. Search for any instances of these files locally and SHA-256 hash them if found, and match to the hashes on the list. If you find any matches, your system is compromised.
    3. Check the DNS cache for any hosts mentioned in the indicators, and if you have network traffic logging you could check there also. Indicators are very likely signs of prior/active attack on your PC.
    4. If nothing found, reconnect to the net and continue..
    5. uninstall Notepad++, or if you want to keep using it, update Notepad++ via a method other than their internal update method. I suggest powershell using winget as its preinstalled in Win10 & 11.

    PS > winget list -q Notepad++
    (will show you available updates)
    PS > winget upgrade -q Notepad++
    (Will install the update if available)

    1. (Optional) disable Notepad++ internal update mechanism, and use winget or another method moving forward. Settings -> Preferences -> MISC: Auto-updater: Disable.
  • This advice is not accurate:

    The Rapid 7 post says if you have a hidden folder in “%AppData%” named Bluetooth. You got hacked. So if you don't have said folder, you're good.

    Their post says that the Bluetooth hidden folder in AppData was only used as the initial access vector.

    After initial access, an advanced persistent backdoor they've named "Chrysalis" is delivered and installed via significantly obfuscated methods to minimize chance of detection. The backdoor allows arbitrary code execution via a CMD.exe reverse shell, with additional modes for remote file write, read, and a full self-removal mechism that attempts to delete any trace it was ever on the system.

    The Indicators of compromise section at the bottom contains a list of any files you can check for on your system, and their corresponding SHA-256 values, as well as network indicators if you have logging or wish to check your DNS cache. If you have any files that match or other indicators, then your system is/was compromised. But there is a very good chance that many systems which were compromised now have no remaining trace of breech.

  • So the Fediverse options are better because they ask for and rely upon donations - whereas all the large social network platforms are "free"?

  • Probably just make their fairly crap job worse. The new, more conservative government is pushing this as a pro-women "equal rights for both buyer and seller" policy, when really it just takes rights away from customers and furthers the goals of their puritan mindset.

    The larger problems sex workers face (than equal penalties) is that they don't do a 'real job' according to the govt, so cannot get social security coverage, no unions, and very limited legal protections for their high risk job. A situation ripe for exploitation by a criminal class.

    If the government really wanted to protect them with equal rights they would follow the example of many/most western countries and legalize prostitution completely, granting tax status, social services and welfare, regulation of the industry, and legitimizing the work (thereby reducing the social stigma eventially).

    NB: I was just reading that only intercourse is illegal, and even that was pretty lax law because the fine is only ~$130 US - less than prostitutes would generally earn from an individual client. So; oral sex, anal sex, etc: fully legal - this allows brothels and prostitutes to operate quite openly, advertise etc with few legal issues.

  • TIL Asahi was named by an epic alcoholic I guess.

  • TFW regular lottery money isn't enough for an average apartment in Seoul, let alone living expenses and upkeep costs.

  • Its likely this is designed with a plan to push advertising or self-promotion.

    Eg: step one is done - figure out how to both find threads early & get your content picked up as a good answer regularly and consistently. Step 2 - start inserting 'first hand' recommendations or even just mentions of products and services.

    I've already seen webpages with the most esoteric or niche product/service recommendations (like some random Indian consultancy with 2 people listed in it, and no other significant web footprint) pop up in first page web results. Its another AI deathblow to the utility of search engines.

  • The Trump companies have been sued and lost dozens of times - and as figurehead and CEO of most of them I presume civil damages cases could wipe out a lot of the Trump family fortune. But, Trump has been working with the mob since the 80s and had Roy Cohn (mob laywer) as his personal laywer back then and for many years, so being career criminals (essentially a mob family), I'd not be surprised if most of the money and assets are carefully squirreled away in offshore accounts and trusts and whatnot.

    Also given that the US is doing everything it can to pull apart legislative protections against the billionaires class, it would probably all be a major uphill battle without a sweeping change of government and an expansion of the supreme court.
