  • Everyone I talked to knew that this was what was going to happen when Broadcom bought VMware. I work in a relatively agile industry so everyone starting moving away from VMware as soon as the sale was announced. But I know a lot industries will be stuck for awhile.

  • This sounds like it’s exactly what Broadcom intended. They are going to charge as much as they can and companies that depend on it will have to pay until they can move away and that may take years. Broadcom didn’t dig a hole. They triggered a trap on their customers.

  • And god help you if you forget those 3 lines somewhere and you silently have database failures or something else.

  • They’re basically fashion victims.

  • My favorite is “Java is slow” said by someone advocating for a language that’s at least 10 times slower.

  • Robots and software doing people’s work for them should be humanity’s greatest achievement, but capitalism makes it a disaster and humanitarian crisis.

  • Everyone who works on making software is a developer, even people who don’t program at all. people who make art for software work in software development. A “coder” only writes code. It’s more of a task than a job. A software engineer does technical design and probably also codes.

  • If it’s regurgitating other people’s work then it needs citations.

  • You can’t write a paper covering scientific topics without plagiarism. A human would be required to. Generative AI should be held to at least as high of a standard.

  • Still not ok.

  • I think the bots will be hard to detect unless they make one of those bizarre AI statements. And with enough different usernames, there will be plenty that are never caught.

  • Why do you think Reddit would remain a valuable source of humans talking to each other?

  • Everyone is joking, but an ai specifically made to manipulate public discourse on social media is basically inevitable and will either kill the internet as a source of human interaction or effectively warp the majority of public opinion to whatever the ruling class wants. Even more than it does now.

  • I wish the article said how old the plane is. A lot of Boeing jets are 50+ years old and at that point, you have to blame the airline. But this article doesn’t say.

  • Software development is never profitable?

  • Yeah. That’s exactly what a cruise missile is and has been for decades.

  • People will pay for things that they perceive to be unfair deals.

  • Yes. This projector is one of the worst things to happen to humanity.

  • It is worse if a foreign company steals. It siphons money off of our economy worse than when an American company does it. It’s bad either way though and I’m glad something is being done about it in this case.
