  • It's a man-bites-dog story, both figuratively and literally.

People being cruel to animals as part of the food chain? It's a day that ends in "y"

A potential vice president of the United States killed a dog because she didn't like it? That's newsworthy.

It might focus attention on animal cruelty.

Side note: Joe Biden very clearly likes his dogs, and treats them perhaps a little too well. Donald Trump famously doesn't have any pets, and uses euphemisms like "...like a dog" to invoke cruelty. Make of that what you will.

  • Just so everyone know how much of a blue-collar employment apocalypse this would be: "trucker" is the number one job title in most US states, and literally the last decent paying job you can get without a degree in most of them.

Automating it away--without a transition plan because fuck the poor--will devastate most of the Midwest and the South, as well as much of Canada.

If you think you have a problem with angry disenfranchised men now, just wait.

  • If the internet has done anything, it's a) been a boon for people studying tribal psychology, and b) put a fork in the information deficit model.

  • The justice system is extraordinarily lenient if you're rich and can afford good lawyers.

Trump would probably already have beaten the rap if he could afford, or at least would pay for, good counsel.

  • This is what the State is afraid of: not that people will protest Israel's actions, but that the left might organize trans-nationally and demand better from their governments.

They've been happy to let the political Right metastatize because at least fascism can be good for business, but they're terrified of the rest of us realizing the we have the numbers and that the rich need us more than we need them.

They had a narrow escape in 2008 and spent the last decade and a bit stoking culture wars. The last thing the west wants is it's own Arab Spring.

  • It's not to excuse this kind of thing, because it's monstrous, but you can draw a line from this rhetoric to Netanyahu's actions.

He's put a target on the backs of the entire Jewish diaspora.

  • But remember, the pro-life party in the US is largely favour of this war.

(So's the pro-choice party, but at least in this one small way they're not shameless hypocrites)

  • Considering that the US at least notionally holds servicemembers to account eventually, I'd say that Israeli military gets more special treatment.

I don't think people realize what Israel's actions are doing: they're putting a collective target on the Jewish diaspora, if not the west as a whole. Stop following rules and you shouldn't be surprised when it's done to you in return.

  • I hate to say it, because it sounds like conspiracy-mongering, but the reason is "Money".

A lot of people want the narrative to go a certain way, and those people have a lot of money and thusly a lot of influence. That they're losing control of the narrative has caused them a kind of narcissistic injury, and they're lashing out.

  • They also have money, which they're using to its maximum effect.

    And there's always the Mossad...

  • Just for context, Monsanto is a Missouri native.

  • I’m sure that as soon as, eg, Donald Trump or some other prominent conservatism locked up we'll be hearing about how "unfair" the prison system is.

Sort of like how due-process and prisoner wellbeing suddenly became something Republicans cared about when J6 folks started getting thrown in predetention.

  • He's also a felon, so there's that...

  • Interesting how he can ban stuff on behalf of China, or when it's someone criticizing him, or pointing out where his jet is.

  • I’m a little uneasy over the idea that anyone would have to do anything to go out of the way for their own safety

What's interesting, or awful, is that was exactly what was being asked of Palestinian and Middle Eastern diaspora members: that they hadn't disavowed Hamas (or ISIS, or going back to 2001, Al Qaeda) enough and were suspect until they did.

It was so bad that we saw joke headlines like "Palestinian children killed in Israeli strike criticised for not condemning Hamas".

  • This is why you don't commit war crimes: it puts your whole diaspora I'm danger.

  • If you're worried about having done a Milosevic, you probably did.

  • It's amazing how, even ten years ago, even one of the things Trump did would have killed another candidate's political career, if not toppled an entire government.

I thought that shit Bush II's people got a pass on was bad, but this is next-level banana Republic, Silvio Berlusconi "Hey, I thought she was 18" level stuff.

  • Capitalism is the problem, here.

This should be a warning: the rich are going to fight the idea of post-scarcity tooth and nail, because not being able to coerce people woth the threat of homelessness or starvation will remove just about the only lever they have.

  • Jesus only physically attacked one group of people.

    Religious capitalists.
