  • I was managing with virtual box on the work machine. But following win 11 the performance under hyper v is so appalling that I gave up.In the end my solution is a 2nd hand ThinkPad off FB marketplace that I use for work.Browser apps cover all the word/excel/outlook/teams requirements.Winboat is covering the very limited set of other apps.Everything else I do works better in Linux, or at least better on a device I have admin for.Yes I am out of pocket but not significantly, and not having to deal with windows has been completely worth it for me.

My brother recently had an issue with a hospital car park, a dead battery and the total impossibility of locking the car.You could lock the driver door with the physical key, but there was no way to lock any of the other door without the battery. Just a massive step back from the little pop-up-pressable-thingy or latch near the handle of older models

  • I wouldn't say it was my favourite FTL but it has some interesting implications.

    The artificial wormholes of The Algebraist by Ian Banks. I can't say too much if you haven't already read it, but it's artificial wormholes that have to be transported sublight.

    All the new wormholes are of course lovely and high capacity, but much of the network is still the original tiny little ones first installed. So your military at least uses kilometer long needle ships that can fit through these small points.

    Think fitting an aircraft carrier through a Stargate.

  • If your garden is that size then a boundary wire system is very manageable. You got any tricky elements? Ponds, step slopes etc?

    Also while I'm fully in favour of HA integration that is going to push the price up. But what's the scenario you want that for? Robomowers are a good fire and forget application. No integration needed, but if you really must there are some easy modifications involving the rain sensor that can give some limited control.

  • I'm saying this a someone that has worked for multiple institutions, raised hundreds of conduct cases and has more on the horizon.

    The article says proven cases. Which means that the academic conduct case was not just raised but upheld. AI detection may have been used (there is a distinct lack of concencus between institutions on that) but would not be the only piece of evidence. Much like the use of Turnitin for plagiarism detection, it is an indication for further investigation but a case would not be raised based solely on a high tii score.

    There are variations in process between institutions and they are changing their processes year on year in direct response to AI cheating. But being upheld would mean that there was direct evidence (prompt left in text), they admitted it in (I didn't know I wasn't allowed to, yes but I only, etc) and/or there was a viva and based on discussion with the student it was clear that they did not know the material.

    It is worth mentioning that in a viva it is normally abundantly clear if a given student did/didn't write the material. When it is not clear, then (based on the institutions I have experience with) universities are very cautious and will give the students the benefit of the doubt (hence tip of iceberg).
