  • Their intent was to cut jobs/costs. They worked as designed. The user experience being improved was never the real goal of these, both on the employee and customer side. I'm fine using them for a small number of items/one item, but if I'm going to buy a bunch of things or anything that requires special handling (alcohol), I just skip them. I also skip them if there's no line at a human checkout because I don't want to drive those folks out of jobs either.

  • Parent, forced to choose between poverty and caring for child with cancer, gets a helping hand from coworkers when their employer would just let them starve.

  • That and Russia bombing one of it's own villages by accident...

  • Apple is the least terrible of my list.

  • ATV is the only box I recommend. I'm anti-Google, don't trust Amazon (and now their service is going to do ads on a paid Prime membership), and Roku has major privacy issues at least in the past. Curious why you're seeking an alternative to Apple.

  • The amount of screens in that is a hard nope for me. If A/C and radio/volume aren't tactile buttons/knobs, that's a deal breaker.

  • NYT should just abandon it like NPR did when they were labeled as "state media". NPR recently said it had near zero impact on their site traffic.

  • Won't cost them anything near weeks of dev time. They can just write it into their terms of service and prompt you to re-accept those next time you access the site.

  • So Google, like Amazon, is trying to play the "they work for a subcontractor that only supports us, so it's their fault, not ours" card. I really want to see the NLRB smack this pattern down hard and set an example for all the other companies to try to avoid unionization by way of not directly hiring people.

  • Retail managers are about the dumbest people I've ever worked with. All they know how to do is boss people with passive/submissive personalities around (poorly) and make up rules when things go awry. Also shifting blame onto others is a key skill in retail management.

  • I once automated a co-worker out of a job with a 13-line bash script. I felt guilty on a human level, but they were also awful so that guilt faded pretty fast.
