He’s pro-money and power. Initially, he indicated that he would let the ban pass. Then, TikTok execs went to Mar-a-lago and he has changed his tune. What changed? Probably they bribed him.
How is Vanguard a mega-vulture? Their ownership stake derives from their index funds, which make up American retirement funds like 401ks and IRAs. They mostly vote according to board recommendations, but have increasingly tried to offer customers other voting options.
I think the original sin was that democrats after Reagan felt they needed to court big business and so Bill Clinton passed NAFTA. NAFTA basically gutted the middle class and accelerated the erosion of union power, which had been the base of democratic power as well. So, the Republican Party now has both the ultra wealthy and the white working poor. This is pretty remarkable given that their interests do not align at all.
Elon Musk wouldn’t be a literal strongman, if only because he doesn’t officially run a country. Though he does behave similarly in running his companies. Strongman might be the wrong word. Narcissist might be better. I think with those types, Trump can find himself needing to defer to bigger narcissists than himself.
That's increasingly a not very nuanced or serious stance to hold given that actual journalists and columnists do publish on substack, especially those that are trying to break away from billionaire controlled "news sources" with owners that are actually interfering in editorial and reporting decisions. Do you remove all op-eds from your "news sources"? If not, you're saying billionaire-controlled "news sources" are legitimate, but not independent journalists and columnists with actual bona fides, including having been part of establishment media or worked in government previously. The internet has destroyed journalism, seems wrong to tune out those who are trying to put it together again.
So, op-eds from main stream media are allowed, but journalists publishing their work through substack is not allowed. So, only the establishment is allowed to have their voices heard. Got it. Quite the hill to die on @jordanlund
Yeah — stop making me reset the god damn oven, microwave, and coffee maker every time the power flickers. At the very least my coffee maker has a small battery in it that seems to endure shorter outages, but if manufacturers aren’t willing to have a back up battery for this, then they should take out the god damn clock altogether. It’s mostly pointless— especially these days. My microwave is so tedious too — it asks the day, month, and year. Why does my microwave need to know the fucking date? It actually serves no purpose.
Trump seems to be easily dominated by other strongmen. It’s possible Trump is afraid of Elon Musk and won’t have the confidence to stand up to him, nor the financial means.
But OpenAI has received more than $13 billion in funding from Microsoft over the years, and that money has come with a strange contractual agreement that OpenAI would stop allowing Microsoft to use any new technology it develops after AGI is achieved
The real motivation is to not be beholden to Microsoft
