I don't really follow X, Bluesky, Instagram, TikTok, etc. so I basically live under a rock. Sometimes I ask dumb questions to try to understand people a little better. Apologies if my questions inadvertently offend anyone. I mean no harm.

  • Is there a self-hosted project that does url decoding in a privacy respecting fashion?

  • Fun fact: Base64url is not quite the same as base64. Its alphabet is slightly different from base64 so its characters can be used in more places (URLs, filenames, etc.).

    I suppose the tool's name is more clear for those who are aware of those differences, but very unclear for others.

  • There's also that cultural shift that resulted in people's Teslas getting burned or vandalized. I would imagine that some many would-be Tesla buyers changed their minds because they wouldn't want their new car to get attacked.

    So with the tax rebate ending and the Tesla destruction, I'm oddly kinda optimistic about that 6%. It's still progress

  • To me, that just looks like "move fast and break things" taken to an extreme level. Quantity ≠ quality. Honestly, I think it kinda makes the other companies look better, in terms of software quality.

    (I'm going solely by the chart though; I have not installed any of these apps)

  • Yeah but that's a porn site, not Discord, Reddit, Instagram, X, etc. A porn site is at least understandable. I mean, people have had to show ID to buy physical porn for years, so it's at least not a new concept. (I would never upload my PII in exchange for porn, but I can at least understand the logic.)

    My job at the time just requested that we work from home whenever possible, so I didn't gain much extra free time (aside from transit time saved, which I won't complain about 🙂)

  • Ah that makes sense. Personally, I tend to avoid urban areas if possible. Too much air pollution, noise pollution, light pollution, people... Maybe it's a sensory thing. I could see how it's much easier to build a public transit system when everyone's so close together though

    Americans value convenience quite a lot. We even trade our personal data for it.

  • I kinda wish the big companies would do the same and just block the states that pass these laws. Like, the state just loses access to a big chunk of the internet as soon as the bill passes, prompting an uproar and a learning opportunity for those lawmakers.

    Obviously that's probably unrealistic, but I can dream 🙂

  • They aren't a solution to the problem today, but they've advanced quite a lot compared to when I first had this idea like three years ago, and lots of tech companies continue to dump massive amounts of money into advancing it even more.

    I'm not saying LLMs (or whatever the next big thing after LLMs might be) are the whole solution though. They're just tools.

  • I really hope this can be improved with AI. A teacher can teach in ways that are effective for most students, but not all. But an LLM can scale up more than a teacher. Hopefully educators can somehow leverage that tech as a tool to multiply their own effectiveness.
