  • Is it really a DDOS or piefied just unable to handle an influx of users? Does piefed scale horizontally? Is it async? Does it spawn a thread per request or does it work from a thread/process pool?

Without having looked at the code, my suspicion would be rather that it can't handle thousands of users concurrently and just 20k users trying to use it at the same time looks like DDOS. Piefed is probably nowhere near v1 or has never been tested for performance.

I'd much rather see some evidence for a DDOS e.g a graph showing number of connections to the server, a graph of response time, number of database connections, of something. Just saying "DDOS" when it might just be the software struggling to keep up with legitimate users seems questionable.

P.S this isn't a slight at the piefed devs - performance is usually the last thing on someone's mind who just wants to ship things quickly. Especially with such a demanding and uneducated public that doesn't understand these are unpaid individuals contributing, not paid workers working on the code 9-5, 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year.

  • No. Libraries will always be useful. Not everyone has the credits to generate the tokens necessary to rewrite every lib in existence.

  • Why do you need to do research for GPL? It's the OG opensource license AFAIK that forces users to also opensource their stuff. MIT let's anybody close source your code and make money with it.

GPL isn't perfect as it doesn't solve the funding problem, but MIT is about the worst thing one can do for opensource: do the work for companies, for free, and be OK with never contributing back to the opensource ecosystem.

  • Would be amazing if they set a goal to get off of Microslop's Github.

  • But why MIT? How come that became the default? Why not GPL? Is Microslop Github suggesting MIT by default?

  • I look forward to a response from the EU Commission - if they ever gave a response to the hundreds of comments left with their feedback form. If they just ignore them, it'll be a sad day for Europe.

  • Or maybe not so curious...

  • I don't understand what's going on with the rust community insisting on cuck licences. Do they love writing on their Mac books so much?

  • Are they just dumping stuff into the Epstein files, hoping that it will artificially bloat its size and scare of potential readers? "OMG, 3 million pages? There's no way I'm reading that".

Wouldn't that be like an obstruction of justice?

  • I was really hoping this would come with an announcement of an F-Droid compatible client.

Honestly, I'm paying them and the lack of a Google-less client is really getting to me. Now that the US is openly behaving like an adversary to the EU (as opposed to pretending to be a friend), cutting the cord to the US is becoming more and more important.

If they don't release an F-Droid compatible client this year, I'm cancelling my subscription and moving to a simple SMTP+IMAP provider. Their reluctance to degoogle has rubbed me the wrong way for years now.

P.S And the fact that they stay on threads @protonprivacy@threads.net instead of mastodon is also another reason I want to leave.

  • It's been a while since I left the forums, but there always seems to be drama and something going on. I didn't the community to be very helpful and inviting. It left a very bad taste in my mouth and in mostly avoid it. Now I ask LLMs to whip something up when in need it.

At least as long as you don't really need WiFi of course...

I thought that was a solved problem on Linux. Is it the reluctance to use binary blobs?

  • For some reason, stuff like libre wolf isn't in the guix repo. Not even Firefox. It's very confusing.

  • I'm not that much a fan of brackets and jumping through hoops to install anything non-GNU.

  • Well, I'm not in Microslop platforms, so that's going to be difficult.

Second, the way things work in the current nix/nixos community make it easy to create a PR but very difficult to get it merged. Attempts at writing documentation are nitpicked to death, unless you belong to the privileged class of the documentation team or have merge rights on Microslop's Github.

A fork would also give an attempt at forming a new community with different rules and focus.

  • I haven't yet found out where its major differences lie. And it seems like they haven't taken a firm stance on flakes (yes or no). They also only forked the interpreter, not nixpkgs. A good step, but their documentation wasn't good, the last time I checked.

  • If only the battles were about software. They are about unrelated beliefs and political ideologies. I'd very much prefer ideological battles about software trust me.

  • This is a good question. It isn't clear from the job ad.

  • What happened?

  • One, if blender hires somebody from the US.
