  • Is it because video hosting is substantially more expensive than mostly text and some images (Lemmy and Mastodon) that it brings out that kind of behavior? As in they have more skin in the game so they try to protect it more? Any thoughts on the new Loops platform? Is it suffering from the same issues?

  • Yea either failover or an active/active virtual switch… I’ve been toying with hyperconverged infrastructure and I wanted to bring my network infra into the fold, been looking at OVS. Not for any particular use case, just to learn how it works and I really like the concept of horizontally scaling out my entire infra just by plugging in another box of commodity hardware. Also been toying with a concept of automatically bootstrapping the whole thing.

  • I’m not opposed to a microservice that indexes the fediverse for creating a robust search index. Without it, you’d have to nearly search each server on each service.

  • PeerTube doesn’t have search at all? Yea that is kind of nuts. I’ve had bad search experience across Lemmy and Mastodon as well. I wonder how much is due to decentralized nature of the servers, the federation aspect, or just poor search functionality.

  • OTF receives the majority of its funding from the U.S. government via the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM). Funding is appropriated for OTF through the annual  Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs appropriations and provided to OTF via a grant agreement from USAGM. 

    For FY 2023, Congress allocated $90.5 million for programs to promote Internet freedom globally, representing a $13 million increase from FY 2022. Of the funds allocated for Internet freedom, $40 million was designated for OTF. Per the appropriations, all Congressional funding provided to OTF is used to support “programs to promote Internet freedom globally.” In addition to helping to further OTF’s mission, this funding increase is also further recognition of the increasing need for the tools and technologies OTF supports.

    In addition to funding from USAGM, OTF also accepts funding from other mission-aligned donors for discrete Funds, Labs, or Fellowships. For example, OTF’s FOSS Sustainability Fund is supported in part by funding from Schmidt Futures’ Plaintext Group, Okta for Good, and the Github Foundation.

  • My cynical take on that stance is they probably overstaff the airpots they are flying through to ensure that doesn’t happen. But yea maybe they fall down an elevator shaft.
