  • Foil will do nothing against ultrasonic or any other acoustic weapon, but may, possibly, be of limited use against microwave weapons should they use them.

  • Thank you for putting the effort in. The party apparatus isn't going to want to change, but I'm not sure that it's managed opposition as such, so much as those who are 'in' being happy with their lot and doing what they feel they need to to stop that being taken away.

There's two ways to use that to change the situation, either demonstrate that their comfortable position will be taken away if they don't change their politics, or take it away by finding a candidate you can rally enough support behind. Neither is easy, and both require getting people involved en-mass at the lowest levels of politics, which is going to be hard work with the party pulling against you. It's not impossible though, AOC and Sanders are both candidates of a different stripe and have, so far, held their places. Imagine how different things would be if they were replicated even a few times?

  • This is way. Democrat voters want change, but they're not speaking to the system in a language it understands. The party changes not from the top down, but from the bottom up. That only happens when people with different views stand for, and win, lower level positions. Every voice changed lower down on the totem pole changes the presure on the people making decisions further up. Ultimately enough movement lower down means the top eschalons are pushed out and replaced too.

Whether it's possible to find enough candidates to start filling the party, I don't know, but just focusing on the primaries (or lack thereof) for the top job is missing the wood for the trees.

  • Why allow depreciation? You wouldn't have bought it with the reduced functionality, and it's going to cost you time and effort to remove it and replace it with something else. Inflation will reduce the value more than enough.

  • Currently Vexed Soul - having to deal with customers, especially ones like that! :)

  • Nothing? At least, so long as he's bankrolling his pet they will look the other way.

  • I suspect that is some sort of sunk cost falacy combined with a narative that says only he can get the bad things to stop; once it get's to the point that your cities are being destroyed, you probably wont, and certainly wont have the opportunity to, change leader. It's critical that as many minds as possible are changed before getting to that stage.

  • I normally just use X forwarding over ssh. For simple, X native, apps it usually works nicely, but if you're using something that draws its own UI (electron apps, browsers and the like often do) it'll be extremely painful or just fail.

I believe there is, or was, a way to run a vnc client rootless, but I think you needed to configure the server in a specific way too. It's been a long time since I tried though so things will have changed.

  • The trick is not to arrest most if the really high profile individuals who are critical of the state, but encourage rumours about why they've been spared to discredit them.

  • This seems like the most straightforward scenario. Nothing prevents trump running, or being elected, as Vice President, on the understanding that the duely elected President will step down on day 1. When they wrote the constitution, they didn't bank on a populist fascist, so the language assumes everyone plays fair.

Whether trump is in any state to do anything by then is a different question. If they find someone more useful they may simply shuffle him out of the game by declaring him mentally incompetant.

The absolute best case scenario is that they're just saying this because they know it outrages non-magas, and they love doing that. I've not seen much to support that as the probable outcome though.

  • You can't tell me what to do!!!

Well I suppose, technically, you can tell me what to do, I just wont listen. I probably should, but I won't.

  • From the article:

The 10-person team is trapped at the remote Sanae IV base, which is on a cliff edge about 105 miles inland from the ice shelf, by encroaching ice and weather as the southern hemisphere winter sets. Teams overwintering at the base are typically cut off for 10 months at a time. Sources told South Africa’s Sunday Times that the only way to leave the base now was via emergency medical evacuation to a neighbouring German base about 190 miles away.

As far as I can see it's currently the end of the Antarctic summer, winter is just starting, and will likely last until October. It sounds like something went badly wrong with both the psychological screening of the team members, and the decision for the ice breaker that delivered them to leave before the situation was resolved.

  • Faggots can also be meatballs, you can walk in to a supermarket and buy some faggots, or make them yourself.

The use to mean "a bundle of sticks" is definitely more rare now-a-days though, you're correct.

  • Ba-dum-tish!

  • Faggot is a real word with actual, non offensive, meanings, 'paki' is not.

  • They're cut off, noone's getting in or out until the weather improves, which will be months. The team are on their own with the attacker until then and will probably appreciate counselling when they're out.

  • I have a strong suspicion that if I was suddenly attacked, my brain would dump all ideas of fighting back and just freeze, which of course allows the violence to happen.

Find, and take, local self defence classes. Not necessarily martial arts classes (though they may be involved), but real world self defence. It'll be grittier, nastier and much better practice. Get used to grappling and fighting in a controlled environment, and you'll be much less likely to freeze if you need it in an emergency.

You're right that'll it'll take a long time to change at a cultural level, but that needs to start somewhere, and obe person doing it and then encouraging others could be a local catalyst.

  • You'll be attacked and pay for the priviledge! I suppose what you're really paying for is knowing who's attacking you. Mind you, I think it's free for small sites, which is probably quite an attractive trade-off for many.
