  • Ghettos to me are just the natural destination. People these days try to conflate immigrants all as wealthy immigrants to downplay immigrant successes in upward mobility but pretty sure most non-white people across Europe and the US came over as refugees/asylum seekers usually from wars from invading Americans and Europeans. My impression of what immigrants across Europe are mad about and it's all former colonial holdings that were Muslim countries and have been proxy war central since after the Ottoman empire fell.

They're broke. They're traumatized from a warzone and/or poverty (level of poverty unfamiliar to Americans and Europeans) and then traumatized again from the uprooting their life from tgeir community to another country where they will undoubtedly face some level of racism and language barrier

They're broke so of course they'll end up in poor communities and communities of similar background where they can function day to day with less language barrier issues. Language barrier assimilation. Classic and ongoing solution for people is their children learn the language in elementary/middle school and as elementary/middle school children, they're helping their parents fill out paperwork and talk to doctors/school admins/whoever. Why are children of immigrants so resilient and resourceful but oftenly not so whimsical as kids with long lineages in a country, those children often are doing adult stuff from a very early age to support old people in the community that have trouble learning the countries language. Early age responsibilities mentally age kids quick

Then as the children grow up make money and the neighborhood economically stabilizes from a large community of hard working immigrants, now the white people want to move in for all the high quality food and grocery stores. Not the best landscaping and fresh paint buildings, but possibly the most convienent neighborhoods to live in now that the neighborhoods economically grown and stabilized.

So convienent and ethnic while still mostly anyone under the age of like 50 can speak the countries primary language. There's very little active efforts to force assimilation. It's just children that grow up watching the same media as all the other children wanting to fit in growing up. I don't know what assimilation program even means when Europeans keep talking about it's necessity and using the US as a measuring stick of assimilation program success. The US barely does anything in that regard. Just let's it play out over a couple generations

  • I don't care how you feel about these countries, economic interdependence and globalism has been advertised as the path to preventing wars. The idea of pitting India against China was always messed up. It's pretty much just trying to get former colonial/genocide targets of the western world to try to kill each other for us to take advantage of the remnants.

Better relations between China and India means far less likely chance of war which would be devastating even if though such a war wouldn't make most of us here all that in our feelings. Like how you don't see people all in their feelings about war in the border regions of Congo and Rwanda. Or the Sudan civil war. The multidecade meddling in Somalia to the current state of Somalian civil war. The civil war in Ethiopia/Tigray was practical non-news for being so deadly.

We should want good international relations between these countries. And it's not like India doesn't have good reason to be wary of closer American and European relations

  • I remember in 2019 my workplace was doing large guest lectures from experts teaching how to work with millennials entering the workplace. The teacher early on tried to emphasize that most millennials at that point were late 20s up to almost 40 so everyone's been working with them for a good amount of time now and the crowd was not interested in that.

Just venting about their teenage children who were gen z but wasn't a term used much for a couple more years. Just as entertaining were old millennials in denial and certain they were gen x. Not as entertaining were old gen z that thought they were millennials but learned they were actually gen z and it was a moment of shrug shoulder and pretty much being like, "neat." Like thinking your astrological sign or zodiac animal was one thing your whole life but was off by one.

Similar to like 2021/2022 when I started hearing about how terrible gen z workers out of college were because of growing up on tiktok. Gen z in the workforce at that time grew up on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat. Twitter was genz and millennials tertiary social media. When TikTok came out they had been working for years already or just about to finish undergrad college. 2021/2022 gen z who had the brain rot got that well before TikTok became popular

  • I am not surprised. Europe isn't constant on the same level of racism across it but it's definitely worse everywhere compared to the US. A lot more acceptable to say something racist to non-white people and then be like, it's just a joke have a sense of humor just trying to lighten the mood. Like step into a bar and be the wrong color and the music stops and you're stared at (not joking random bars in Dusseldorf and Stuttgart)

East and nordics worse than west but the west has Italy and Spain. Even then, better in the west but outside of the large cities that are also international tourist destinations it's rough to not be white.

And then the significance of far right political parties and neo Nazi orgs always looked worse in Europe to me. In the US the 2 party system dulls out identity politics a bit even though it's getting worse whereas a 5-30% minority party that's primarily about ethnocentrism is fully possible across European countries and wield a strong influence in coalition forming. In the US, be more scared of law enforcement organizations. Europe fear more the young populace hanging around and the old people staring and progressively law enforcement organizations

Trump was not going to stymie interest in right wing politics for much time at all. It would give way to nationalism. Anti-globalisation that always gives way to anti-immigration that always gives way to anti whatever skin color or religion isn't the majority. Nationalism. Europe's boiling point for centuries. Even before Trump 1 were far right/neo Nazi orgs growing in size across Europe. In my opinion because of how much more of Europe is closer to ethnostates than the US, Europe can quickly devolve into far worse than the US faster. Benefits of Europe for non-whites is the better social safety nets but in terms of institutionalized/unaddressed racial bias/casual racism - all over Europe it's worse than the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The US just makes more headlines.

A joke is that the worst thing for Mexico is being next door to the US. The joke can swap the US for Europe and stick pretty much every country across Asia, Africa, and Oceania for Mexico. If you go back before like Monroe, replace the US with European countries for the former native nations in the americas

Talk about assimilation of immigrants in Europe compared to the US always sounded weird to me. Like there needs to be some major pervasive program to make immigrants like locals however the US manages to do. In the US first and second gen immigrants mostly live in neighborhoods composed of similar background people like Europeans complain about and then by 3rd generation they're mostly fully assimilated but disadvantaged minorities if they're not white but also not necessarily doing worse economically. Usually disadvantaged socially. Disadvantaged in media. There's plenty of effort for higher represeation for black people in everything but like no effort for non-black minorities. Assimilation programs in the US are practically non-existent or nothing burgers. Little effort just Americans mostly don't think about assimilation programs. Assimilate to what defined culture. Things monoculture from the ones born in the US. Out in Europe people are so close to saying reeducation camps for immigrants

  • From what I've seen from Chinese stuff like this and other appliances, they're pretty impressive and creative

  • I'm not negative on this. Streaming apps are easy to cancel and move to something else. Roku will probably raise the price someday and when it's too high, shift off. I checked Roku originals on Wikipedia and they have barely anything significant. A small amount of feature films they have distribution rights to. TV shows, nothing original narrative seems like a hit. Then a bunch of reality shows and like cooking shows.

They're a very long way away from being able to get subscribers on the basis of their original content. Not even Sony has a general streaming service and under them are a bunch of hit TV shows and movies along with their decades of back catalog. Not planning to sub but if I'm insanely bored, I can sub for a month and find some old TV show comedy to put in the background

  • Sucks for Intel but this is pretty funny. Nothing can to according to plan for Intel. Whatever the plan is now hasn't even had half a year to get going. Like sideshow bob in a field of rakes

  • Not that I'm for any bans on social media

i can see why from my personal experience. Even back in like 2014 I viewed YouTube as home to crackpot conspiracy theorists because of friend's I'd seen go down YouTube rabbit holes and pretty much go crazy. Facebook and YouTube. Facebook was home to stupid image macros of stupid conspiracy theories. YouTube for crazy hyper edited conspiracy nut videos. YouTube where someone wants your email or number so they can send you a video you should watch and you learn the person you met is crazy

To this day other social media platforms have cycled in and out as conspiracy theorist and school shooters favorite platform while YouTube has never cycled out since it enabled anyone to upload video

Instagram has always been the self hate/image problems/terrible life planning thinking life after your 20s is over then a person gets to 30 and realize they actually want to have happy next 30 years too and they shouldn't have spent all their money and time chasing dreams they made each day watching other people on Instagram. 6th graders with skin care routines and wanting to show off a lavish lifestyle at like 11 years old, that's Instagram. Also short form Instagram get rich quick schemes and stupid harmful challenges are just as bad of a problem on Instagram and YouTube as they are on TikTok. Before those terrible challenges was based out of Twitter+YouTube.

Twitters it's own weird trending towards underworld now rather than mainstream. Maybe it's like a far less popular Facebook where it's becoming more and more for old people but people don't view it as a basic social media to keep in basic touch with distant people like Facebook

YouTube and Instagram are the worst to me. Facebook used to be worse than Instagram and YouTube but YouTube and Instagram have gotten more important and worse while Facebook has become less important over time while probably being just as bad as before

  • I've been advocating for Linux for a long time. At least to people I know use nothing but the web browser. Gaming and art have been a slow grind. Gaming Steam Deck was the game changer for single player gamers.

Art, it's people that never use software close to their fullest but feel like they have to use what their favorite YouTuber/social media personality uses. Professionals I never encourage a switch unless they're paid too. Already stressed doing edits in the software they know to make a deadline let alone adding in learning new software

Hobbyist and aspiring indies, you don't work with a team of a dozen editors, try Kdenlive. Solo music artist, try ardour especially if you don't even plan to drop your day job for a full time pursuit of a music career. At least practically every hobbyist I've met that focuses on digital drawing/painting uses Krita

  • Reading it, Anthropic guy sounds to me more like an asshole which seems really common for these LLM CEOs. I generally don't care about CEOs in the hardware tech world. Generative AI ones, not even a year of trying to be likeable, just straight to cartoon banker unlikable. All of them

  • Be crazier and huge boost to FOSS game development tools to open source the latest version of Source 2 but it's probably full of proprietary middleware that would have to be replaced to make usable in an open source state

  • Along with the desktop store, it's like epic and Tim specifically try to do as little as they can and then get mad at the lack of user adoption. I hope O3DE and Godot keep developing and gain in adoption to topple unreal engine and more games come out and eat away at Fortnite. If their cash cows went into decline maybe they'd start doing more than what they think people should accept as the minimal viable product to spend their money on

  • Upgrade pack $10. Buy every game besides a handful of local multiplayer games on PC rather than Switch

  • For anyone that hasn't tried it, the EGS store with 3rd party games for Android released back in January. Since then they still haven't added a library/purchased view. You just scroll up and down to find where the games you own among games you don't own. If it helps a company that makes a better store/game platform popular, sweet. If it's just EGS and most other stores like on PC, it'll be a nothing burger. If no one tries to actually improve on Google Play for customers, these stores are going to be glorified game launchers/advertisers

  • I see the modern internet as sometime in the early 2010s when YouTube shifted heavily towards monetisation and changing up the UI for that, Facebook started to shift from VC money to monetizing the platform culminating in its post-IPO super monetization. Facebook buying Instagram and then eventually monetizing it heavy with advertisements

Facebook IPO, YouTube profitability push from Google, Instagram profitability push from Facebook. That all came together to birth the modern online influencer. An incredibly fast rapid shift from a short decade of body acceptance and mild movements against over consumption to now 6th graders have skincare routines and therapy shopping seems bigger than it has ever been

  • It just needs a dark theme. Work computer is powerful enough that I can run local models and use it occasionally. A cloud one that's just using similar open models as what you can easily download is fine to me.

Proton does have aot of work to do understandable to people's annoyance with them. Lack of Linux Drive application but they've released alpha/beta API for Drive. Drive performance isn't great yet. The Docs feature is pretty barebones for now. Calendar is too simple for power users. Regardless for now they're the closest privacy centric replacement for Google services

  • At least Germany, Spain, and Italy have resurgent far right political movements. I am not about to trust government payment systems to not eventually be abused as technology makes control and surveillance easier. A holy book can be replaced with whatever new age self-help, health movement, anti-<ethnicity/sexuality/religion> movement. All it takes is some instability and desperation and people will support whatever or turn a blind eye to whatever they may think is not their problem or they may potentially benefit from. Good for the EU to run their own payment systems. When a conservative wave takes a large enough majority in governance someday, it'll be the same problem as Visa/Mastercard/etc

The governance powers we give with results being leftist in mind will someday be in the hands of conservative who will use them with a kind of zeal that leftist don't

  • To me it's an inevitability that if the EU weans itself off Mastercard/Visa, then EU based payment processors whether credit based or something like SEPA payments for a digital EURO would be censored. The EU would be happy to handle their own business and that may just end up no different than American companies and the American government. The European right can fight against porn while fighting for independent finance infrastructure
