"Old tools" does not mean obsolete or bad. It means tested, hardened, and reliable. And crucially, probably runs in a couple megabytes of memory, which you might need if the cost of RAM suddenly quintuples for no reason.
Well, like in any generation, there is a certain percentage of highly motivated, cream of the crop kids who will rise above it and succeed at becoming well-informed despite everything.
The real danger is the AVERAGE capability of those who DON'T seek better will crater, and in a democratic system, the capability of your system isn't based on your top geniuses, it's based on your average citizen. We're going to have the most brilliant, capable generation of top minds the world has ever seen at the mercy of completely irrational fools ruled by dopamine and novelty.
...so in that sense, I guess it's not really all that different from now.
But for every person who knows about the manipulation and censorship, I guarantee there’s another who’s ignorant of it
I wish it were 1:1. Probably more like 1:20.
Tell people. Save this article and share it. Remind people of the fuckery behind the scenes whenever you get an opportunity.
The idea is sound until you consider that people get into their own bubbles. People who avoided tiktok because they saw the imminent danger are NOT in the same space as people who are all-in. So telling the people around you is great, but 9 times out of 10 you're going to be preaching to the choir. The vast majority who need to know will never hear, and even if they do, it will immediately be met with a response ranging from "ok boomer" to "leave me alone."
This is legitimately a HUGE problem, and we're seeing lots of protests NOW because of the young people who grew up in a media environment that drove home how important values, respect, and human decency were, but given 10 or 20 years, the children who grow up in this new media landscape are going to be VERY different.
People who have lived half a decade on algorithm-fed short-form video feeds are not looking to replace it with text message boards and still image memes.
They're going to stay exactly where they are and just have the nutrient mix of the IV adjusted.
And with the death of PC, the browser won't be far behind. And with apps, delivered through restricted app stores, being the only thing left, the absolute fantasy of grassroots Internet counterculture somehow saving us will fall to the cyberpunk dystopia most people seem so eager to bring about.
He's apologizing because the scale of the protests is giving them cold feet that they could be subject to consequences, but make no mistake... The moment things let up or cool off, the conscience they've found will immediately evaporate.
Fuck off already, you useless scumbags! YOU ARE A CO-EQUAL BRANCH OF THE GODDAMN GOVERNMENT! YOU AREN'T SUPPOSED TO GIVE FANCY, POINTLESS SPEECHES AND BOOTLICK AND BEG FOR THE PRESIDENT TO DO THINGS YOU EXPLICITLY HAVE THE ABILITY TO CONTROL!
Let's stop pretending these stories of people "turning on Trump" mean ANYTHING for actual policy or activity going forward.
The first time anything MIGHT have any impact is after the midterm elections, and that comes with such a laundry list of qualifications...
It will require people willing to stop Trump to win those elections, but that's just step ONE, and that's the EASY step. Next, it will require democrats to be willing to grow a pair and stand for at LEAST one principle, it will require the executive branch to not simply IGNORE any directives or legislation (which they are ALREADY doing - talk to me when the Epstein files are released as required by law), and it will require the Supreme Court to not invent batshit reasons to neuter congressional power.
We are not at a turning point. Things will not get better until they get far, far worse.
”I'm 70, btw!"
