Her concern with landscapes and living creatures was passionate. This concern, feebly called, "the love of nature" seemed to Shevek to be something much broader than love. There are souls, he thought, whose umbilicus has never been cut. They never got weaned from the universe.

  • Some years ago I got in touch with one of the primary maintainers of that fork in the interest of continuing the project after realizing it was so stagnant, and I was essentially warned that doing so would open myself to immense harassment, and that harassment was why everyone involved stopped with the project in the end. So...what is all of this about "if you don't like X, fork it" if that is what will happen when one does? Seems pretty rotten advice to give if it's just going to be sabotaged anyway. Someone I know still uses the outdated Glimpse regardless.

  • There is a reason nearly every software corporation out there is allergic to GPL code, and similarly why they love MIT/BSD/Apache code. I urge you to consider why that is. Licenses do affect how software is used, that is literally the purpose of them.

  • Given the current world we live in I do not want anything that I create or contribute to itself contributed to an exploitative corporation's bottom line (at best) without my consent or their assuredly begrudging reciprocation. This should not be controversial. The GPL accomplishes this. Nothing more lax or permissive does or will. You are not a cool or chill guy because you don't care what someone does with the code you write. You are handing all of those who would sack you the keys to the castle, ushering them inside. That is not abstaining, it's letting your opponents win. No thanks.

  • I use permissive licenses not because I’m a pushover, but because I really don’t care what you do with it.

The point of all of this is that you really should, no matter what it is. I'm sure there is something you would object to having been a part of; protecting your labor from contributing to that only makes sense. If you really have no problems with that, then that is simply terrifying.

  • I literally just want people not to blast their fucking music or videos from their phone speakers on my 1.5 hour commute in a sardine tin on wheels that I have no choice but to take to get my medicine. It's really, really, really not a big ask. It's not. It certainly isn't worth whatever this meltdown is that you're having about...being asked to not be loud around strangers who are compelled to be around you? What in the world is this?

  • No more than can be accomplished with the first sentence of my original post.

  • Everywhere I go I see his face...grendel..

  • These are also what I get. I pack extras in my purse in case the straps break or the foam is uncooperative; it has happened only once so far to my partner during an 8-hour shift at work.

  • My unfortunate lathe moment back in 2021 or so when everyone decided unchecked COVID spread was fine, actually, was that I thought we'd start seeing all this stuff come back as acceptable too. I wonder how long it will be before doctors are smoking in the office again.

  • Based on the responses in this thread I'm led to believe that "being in public" means you can do whatever you want without consideration for anyone else around you. News to me!

  • No.

  • GIMP is a very powerful and important piece of software that I wish they weren't so obstinate about giving the worst name ever. I know it's just an acronym, but it is in effect the name of the project. I've taken to calling it GNU IMP instead.

  • Sometimes it's both!

  • That darn A Virus strikes again.

  • OK, but they're right.

  • Stop making excuses for these people, mostly. They are committing violence and as long as they insist on continuing I don't see any reason to stop telling them what they are doing, especially when I know they can do better and instead choose not to. If you agree with me, why hold water for them?

  • The problem with this excuse is that no one is immune to COVID and there is no cure for COVID. There is no evidence that the body fully clears a COVID infection. No one is "able." It is not that I am singularly "not able"—for one no one makes my stipulation for ability possible when they all have every means to, and mostly proved that they had every means to in the first year of the pandemic when everyone was still afraid and made everything digital or wore masks; nature was healing, remember? So much for that. We all should still be just as afraid of this and demanding we all take it just as seriously as we were then, and we're not. That's not on me. People like me are treated like we're yoga moms into healing crystals or chud YouTube influencers on an exclusive diet of red meat trying to "turn" everyone else with our clickbait nonsense when it's the exact opposite. You all fell for the clickbait. I am largely done with this conversation now. Let everyone catch infinity COVID forever and we'll pick up the pieces of the able-bodied like we always do. Learn the lesson or don't. Personally I'd pick a time not in the middle of unprecedented global precarity to take this bet but as everyone loves saying these days, "you do you."

  • The point is not that I am in here, and think I can do nothing. The point is that you are all out there, and think you can do everything. You are all out there, frozen in time, in denial, when the world changed in 2020. The world changed and no one in the world is changing with it, so now measles returns. Whooping cough returns. Tuberculosis returns. Do you understand? I have done and continue to do plenty with my community of people who are devoted to keeping each other and us all safe. 11 million people are in all these photographs telling me they do not share this value. I go outside every day to people telling me they do not share this value. Whatever is going on out there, it's certainly something, but it's not sustainable in the new world. It's not equitable, it's not emancipatory. The same people screech and holler and scold and assure me that whatever side they're on really cares about those things, but nothing they do can be any of those things if their health, their people's health, the health of everyone involved in present or future is forfeit to the plague—and if that's the case, what good is any of it? Just wear a god damn mask when you're outside your home. It's that simple.

  • To actually respond, I have pretty much checked out of interacting with most of society when I can help it, because they hate people like us that have anything wrong with them and have no interest in being better about it. My animal (another void like yours) is the purity of the world that keeps me alive. They are so much easier to understand than other people. As long as this world has them, I'll keep going. Maybe that helps you too. I'm sorry that I can't be more helpful.
