  • There's really nothing wrong with old tech. Half of the world still runs on tape drives. Until very recently my laptop was still 4:3. I haven't upgraded my desktop PC in something like 6 years and it's still fine. I don't play cutting edge video games or do intensive video rendering, but I imagine most people aren't either and they could live without AAA games.

  • My doctor making a mistake is human, my doctor withholding medical care makes us opposed.

    This is the fundamental issue that I think most people don't think of when I compare doctors' roles in society to that of the police. It's really not that unbelievable if we consider the overwhelming role they actually play, which is exactly that: the bureaucratic gatekeeper between receiving care or receiving no care. Don't say anything to piss off a doctor...sound familiar?

    You are doing the thing right now. The other choice is "none of those things," actually, and you don't get that by voting harder because as you've just demonstrated you were not given the choice. Is any genocide acceptable to you? The line is never "less genocide," it is "no genocide."

  • This is how I am yeah. I have been doing this for a long, long time. My advice has always been unhelpful..."my voice sucked a lot and made me miserable until after years of effort it didn't" isn't what people want to hear. "I had to answer a questionnaire including a timeline of gender-nonconforming acts I could remember from my birth to current day or I didn't get HRT" is not at all accurate anymore, and for good reason. I hardly relate to most trans people anymore, but not really for any bad reasons I don't think (well, not usually. "clocky" being common vernacular still makes me uncomfortable, for example). Things change; it is what it is.

  • It makes me very depressed to think about it all. If this is how low the bar goes after half a decade of struggle on a single front, how on earth does anyone expect any other "revolution" and its consequences to go? The disabled struggling for their survival carry the movement while the able-bodied fumble through it all and expect everyone to worship the ground they walk on for doing less than the bare minimum, often doing the same rug pull you see reactionaries do with sentiments like, "well I would have done this if you weren't so mean about it!" if there is even any acknowledgment at all. I'm not sure which is worse.

    An utterly despairing forecast for everything else.

  • I like that one a lot but it's very inactive in comparison, which makes sense. Some of the regulars there are also ML-types from what I can tell. I will say I am also super disappointed in zcc for same reasons already mentioned. I would not have found my city's still-COVIDing group, or my current roommate, without someone randomly DMing me there after I reached out.

  • It's funny you mention the Sims, many years ago I tried to do a nudist family with a Sims 2 nudism + de-censoring mod that didn't actually do anything about them being embarrassed, either, which sort of soured me on the whole thing. Like you said, you can't really do anything in the vanilla game due to it. I recall the mod made it so they had to "work up" the courage to be comfortable with being seen nude around even their spouses which was obnoxious. I never tried anything in the later games. Certainly someone has refined the concept since then!

  • Hey, I did the same thing for my first playthrough! I was a druid using animal shape almost exclusively along with the subclass trait from...barbarian, I think, that gave you bonus AC for not wearing anything. I thought it was very appropriate to roleplay and also validating as another nudist (small world) to see how nudity was treated as just normal. I was very surprised the game allowed for it. I don't play a lot of games these days but I wound up becoming so enthralled by this one.

  • Accessibility is a huge blindspot in all of these conversations. The tools that work with Wayland are not up to parity with what works in X. Until that is the case I see no reason to switch.
