  • The way people act while advocating for something does in fact affect the efficacy of their advocacy whether they want to admit it or not.

    • Voicemeeter and Virtual Audio Cables for separate audio channels with separate volume controls, macro keys, and easily adjustable toggling between outputs (more easily adjustable and less latency than JACK)
    • Eartrumpet for easy and immediate per-program control over audio channels
    • FL Studio
    • Adobe Premiere
    • MX Ergo drivers that have full functionality including remapping and holding down mouse 4 and mouse 5 and toggleable precision mode with LED indicator
    • No sudden troubleshooting mid-way through working on projects to break my flow
    • A Windows testing environment
    • 100% compatibility with every game I own

There may be a few more, but these are the big ones. JACK, at the moment, just isn't a replacement for Voicemeeter and while there are some DAWs for Linux, they're not FL and I don't know if they're compatible with Guitar Rig. I've used OpenShot for video as well, and while it's not terrible it isn't really comparable.

I'm sure that Linux is a good fit for many users. Personally, as an operating system alone if it weren't for these issues, I'd prefer it. I'd love to be able to do what I need to do and also have a plasma, it's much nicer. But at the moment it isn't a real option without sacrificing things that I actually need. I also really can't be dealing with suddenly needing to sort out how to make a finicky program work at the drop of a hat when I'm in the middle of working on a project.

I've been dabbling with Linux since the early 00s. I like it and I wish it were a substitute for Windows for my use case, but it isn't. No amount of people being rude and obtuse in threads will change that. Time might, but it hasn't yet.

  • You can also just stay on Windows 10 and get 3rd party security updates. That is a legitimate option that for a lot of people is going to be their best choice.

  • I imagine the downvotes are backlash against all the people who convince themselves that Linux is the only viable solution regardless of use case or workflow. There are definitely loads of people in the Linux community and the open source community in general who will pick a piece of software and proselytize it with no consideration whatsoever whether it fits someone's actual needs. Like, personally, I like Linux but there are things I need to do that require me to have Windows. For some people this fact is absolutely unacceptable and they simply won't hear it.

  • Threads like this are why people don't use open source. It sounds like a reality-denying anti-intellectual one-size-fits-all cult in here. This is also like half the threads about Linux. Just armies of tech bros who couldn't put themselves in someone else's shoes if their life literally depended on it.

  • I'll always remember that time when Obama was up on stage taking questions from the Internet after having literally run on change as a campaign slogan and when someone asked about legalizing marijuana he literally laughed as if that would be absurd. And this is someone who did change quite a lot. The Democratic party's mainstream has been afraid of radical change for a long time, even though it's been demonstrated over and over again that it's what brings energy to the party and gives them the ability to move the ball.

I really hope this past election makes them a little less cautious and a little less centrist. We really can't have our representatives just sitting on their hands waiting for the tide to wash away any and all progress. We have to keep pushing forward so when we do take a step back we don't lose everything all at once.

  • That's a weird spelling of "hate-crime".

  • I figured out something absolutely crazy. You can put vegetables into the ground, (you know, the dirty thing outside?) and they will literally just start making more of themselves.

Also, you know all those naked people outside with too much hair and extra legs instead of arms? They're made of meat!!! It's true!

  • I don't know how it works in the UK, but if possible I'd look into getting a protection order against harassment. Definitely gather whatever evidence you can (a security camera might be a good investment), but with someone like this they may very well tell on themselves if it goes to court. A reasonable person wouldn't be doing something like this in the first place, so they may well make it readily apparent that this is the sort of thing they think is acceptable in a court room. Especially if they've admitted to you to doing it on purpose.

If you're able to request police body camera footage, it might be worth it to do that after calling in a noise complaint, and if you share a hallway you might be able to record the interaction yourself if not. If you rent and do share a hallway, consider asking your landlord to install a camera in a shared space so that you can get footage that way. Make sure to check the laws in your area regarding consent for recording. If you're allowed to record secretly, maybe you can get them to admit it again on camera.

I had a similar situation to this with a transphobic neighbor who was doing this for about 6 months. A court date got it squared away, because she told on herself to the police while on our hallway camera. It might help in your situation too.

  • Because there are conservatives on Lemmy.

  • The system itself is done but the setting-specific stuff is still in the works. It's designed to be modular, so there are different systems for different settings. The sort of cyberpunky shadowrunny system is close to ready to release a doc aside from like needing more feat-like upgrades and equipment lists. There's also a kind of Eldritch apocalyptic setting that overlaps with most of the same modules and is nearly ready.

I've been putting it on hold lately and focusing on a game I'm making in Godot because I sort of ran out of steam for playtesting it. It is a huge pain in the ass to be both designing a system and planning a weekly campaign to test the system with at the same time.

I'll probably swap back to working on it for a while once the game is done, because I plan on using the system in my next game.

  • Two of these stats are in my TTRPG (gumption and moxie).

It also features things like pep, knacks, savvy, and nerve.

  • Welcome to the comments, also known as your daily reminder that Lemmy degraded into a cesspool in the span of a single year and is literally just reddit now and why am I still posting on or reading

  • I would never call someone a bigot for talking about Harry Potter. It does absolutely reduce my opinion of them, though. I keep it to myself, but I see it as pretty thoughtless.

  • Definitely not true. I drove a cab for 12 years, it went great. I don't tailgate, I don't get in people's way, and I don't drive like a feckless confused imbicile.

  • Honestly, having to listen to people babble about Harry Potter just feels like a slap in the face. Like, I know people who have the best intentions in regard to supporting trans people, but they'll still happily make endless references to this garbage in front of me as though it wouldn't immediately bring to mind someone who is actively engaged in trying to get others to agree that I shouldn't exist. Some of them also buy merch that I guarantee puts money directly in her pocket.

It bothers the shit out of me.

  • Being able to drive safely also means being able to prioritize. It's not to anyone's benefit to be so blinded by the rules that you'd drive into a brick wall if one appeared in the road.

Spineless drivers are nearly as dangerous as arrogant drivers.

  • Why not just pull into the empty left lane and have them pass on the right? One less thing for you to think about.
