  • 700 professionals in India probably make more coherent software than AI.

  • England too, and I think many cultures world over, actually.

But in the UK we had a scandal some years ago because retailers sold 'beef' that was actually part horse. So it was misleading customers into eating a meat they'd find objectionable.

  • jagged_circle likes his meat live

  • Food regulations are (mostly) about restricting food producers in ways that I already want/approve. Food safety, so I know there isn't mercury in my baby's formula.

It's necessary especially because companies want their profits, more than they want to produce good food.

"Government dictating what I can eat" is restricting me about my own body, in ways perhaps I disagree with.

  • Most cryptographic protocols include some form of endpoint authentication specifically to prevent MITM attacks. For example, TLS can authenticate one or both parties using a mutually trusted certificate authority.

For most purposes, doesn't HTTPS thwart MITM attacks? It's designed to be resilient against MITM for the whole chain through your ISP and other gateways to the destination, no?

  • You make a fair point. Perhaps it's just the cultures I've lived in, though, but my impression is that the vast majority of people value some amount of what might be considered small talk. So for those of us who don't take to it naturally (and I am also one who's had to learn small talk... I'm okay at it in many situations now but not all) it's probably worth having a feel for it for the sake of friendly relationships with many people around us.

  • Ah, sorry to hear that. It's a tough barrier to break, when a partnership is like that. I wish you the best in the future.

  • Hi honey, how's the weath--

"Go Away! I'm Not In A Kissing Mood!"

  • I read down and down the list, and this is the first one I can't find any way to disagree with.

  • YOU WILL BE CUTE OR YOU WILL BE DUMPED

  • Linux is one option for the core, central part of how a computer works, called a 'kernel'. All programs talk to Linux, which talks to the physical computer.

Windows has its own version of that kernel, Mac has another.

Linux is special because it's free for people to use, change, and check what it's doing.

There's a lot of programs built to work with Linux: together they are what you use to use your computer. Like, Windows is actually lots of smaller programs working together, and Mac OS is lots of smaller programs working together. Most people say 'Linux' meaning all these programs running together, with Linux at the core.

In other words, Linux is a system that runs on your computer, so you can run the programs you want (like Emacs, or Inkscape) on top of that.

  • Cars don't create congestion, roads do.

  • Am I indeed? But at least, if I can observe a difference between hands off the steering wheel and hands on, with the car swerving accordingly, then something seems to be going on. Perhaps the adult is moving the toddlers hands too; or perhaps the toddler truly has agency.

  • IIRC vi has been installed, or perhaps tinyvim, then I always go and install vim-gtk

  • Understandable. And relatable.

  • Too bad. I chose for free will to exist, and I'm happy with my decision.

  • Too bad you don't have the free will to change that ;-)
