  • My sister's take has been that since trans women don't go through the pain of menstruation or giving birth, they have no right to suggest they "earned" being a woman.

    I mean that and she thinks Disney became woke and they ruined her beloved 90s films. I remember talking about Putin and how he said the most Bond villain thing with "you in the west believe history is a struggle between oppression and freedom, I see it as a struggle between chaos and order". Her take is history is a struggle between modesty and debauchery and we've gone too far in the debauchery direction.

    I love her, and she can surprise me with her humor, but overall she can turn into Angela from the office, but she's not even religious.

  • Boy I miss flying southwest. I flew spirit for the first time last weekend, and our flight got redirected because of storms over Chicago. We stayed in Detroit for a few hours, but getting in at 3am when you expected 10pm feels as exhausting as running through the woods, pulling out your cellphone to find it died. There's no way to call for help, and it is dark. You know where your home is, you just need to find the trail. "Uphill, UPHILL" you think "wait I already saw that rock, did I? Or not?" You are delirious, the lines on the shadows get fuzzier. The neurotoxin is kicking in. You keep running and as your eyes begin to water you quietly hum "you are my sunshine" to try and keep consciousness. You suddenly stop to see rustling from the bushes. You aren't humming now. There is nothing discreet about this, he smelled you, he saw you, and he wants you. From some depth of your weary soul comes the most primal yell that you have no control over. You sprint as fast as you can in the other direction, but suddenly your leg gives way. You fall into the mud and attempt to get back up, but now the world is spinning. "God not like this" you think. You stumble again and again, but the footsteps behind you went from a run to a walk. It's over, but you knew it was long ago. There was no other way this would end. You turn to see him in his dark determined eyes. He is covered in blood brandishing a clever. He doesn't even look human. He is the ghost story your parents told you about as a child. He is the unsettled heart beat that wakes you in the night. He is Shia LaBeouf.

  • Climate change has already created draughts and food shortages. It has already pushed animals into ecosystems where they don't belong leading to destruction of those ecosystems. Ocean acidification has been killing fish populations.

    These have created instability in countries across the world as people grapple with worsening conditions. This has lead to conflicts that have created massive amounts of refugees, which in turn has been creating populist and authoritarian attitudes in the west as we deal with refugees knocking on our door. This has created massive rifts in our societies and ultimately is the connecting factor for the issues we face.

    As my old history professor would say about global conflicts- it's the bottom of the 9th, the bases are loaded, and it's always mother nature up to bat.

  • Agreed, there are lots of instances, and that may be one thing that allows Lemmy to actually have space for different political leanings. As I understand, conservative circles are not very large here, but that can change, and smaller communities generally are healthier. Check those out and recruit your pals- be the change you want to see in the world!
