  • In high end circuses, the clowns are the most experienced acrobats and performers. There's a decent chance the clowns are the coaches for the new performers doing the fancy stuff. It takes a ton of practice and experience to do acrobatics and gymnastics "badly" without getting horribly injured.

  • If the GOP leadership won't even allow Congress to be in session for votes to happen in the first place, it doesn't really matter.

  • If you've never actually watched a child die from a preventable cause, I can see why you would be more willing to give up on fighting the parents on these things. I worked at a pediatric level 1 trauma emergency room before starting medical school. I have watched far too many children die because of some stupid mistake/decision their parent made to be willing to let it go.

Having to do chest compressions on a baby that went into respiratory arrest then cardiac arrest because of a vaccine preventable illness does something to you....and if it doesn't? Something is seriously wrong with you.

  • Yeah, but it's not the baby's fault their parents are kool aid swilling morons.

  • Yeah, I like the idea of keeping them here to live in the hellhole they're making. It's bullshit that they get to turn this country into a nightmare and bop off to tropical vacations while we try to keep people from dying from their shitty decisions. (I work in healthcare and get to try to convince people to get vaccines. It's a painful conversation to have multiple times a day.)

  • I'm in a similar boat, but I have a couple Democrats in my state that I think are good eggs. For one, Tim Walz has been an amazing governor and I really hate what the Harris campaign did to him and his reputation. Also, Ilhan Omar and Peggy Flanagan are pretty nifty all around. Outside Minnesota, AOC seems pretty decent to me and I have high hopes for Mamdani (although, he explicitly identifies as a Democratic Socialist)

  • I've met a POC transwoman who was a sex worker and receiving Medicaid that showed up to her medical appointment in a bedazzled MAGA tank top in 2019. She was.....interesting.

  • If I'm a medical student (soon to be physician), am I really just stuck with Wizard? I do a lot of emergency medicine stuff and CPR is straight up necromancy, but I don't recall necromancer being a class. (it has been a hot minute since I've gotten to play D&D)

  • Nier: Automata has a special place in my heart and I'm seriously considering getting a tattoo of Pascal because of that story thread.

  • And those same men are the ones that are so offended by women choosing the bear.

  • This does seem to be the most consistent explanation.

  • As a cis-woman that plays Arma, I find it very amusing/interesting that the trans-women in my Arma unit outnumber the cis-women 3 to 1.

  • Here's a Reuter's article that has a bit more information about the shooter. Nick Fuentes has criticized Charlie Kirk for not being right-wing or racist enough. If the shooter subscribes to even a portion of Fuentes' views, that makes him substantially further right than even most non-MAGA republicans.

    From the article:

"the symbology found on the bullet casings suggests the shooter was part of the so-called Groyper movement, associated with far-right activist and commentator Nick Fuentes."

  • I'll be getting my hysterectomy in the new year. I'm looking forward to it.

  • I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you aren't a member of one of the demographics that the fascists are trying to oppress. Debating abortion rights as a woman of reproductive age is literally arguing for my right to live in the event that I accidentally get pregnant because a pregnancy would quite literally kill me. Arguing for LGBTQ+ rights is arguing for the rights of my sibling to exist or for my best friend to marry her soon-to-be wife. I have the privilege of being white, but for BIPOC, arguing for racial equality and justice is literally trying to convince bigots that they are actually humans with equal rights.

These discussions become significantly more taxing and distressing when you're going in rhetorical circles with someone who is telling you to your face that they think you are less worthy of rights and that your life doesn't matter to them.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong here, but this is something I see a lot from leftist cis-men and white leftists is the failure to recognize the toll these conversations take on those who are the direct targets of that bigotry.

  • The problem is with the fact that when the discussion about human rights, there is no middle ground. There is no compromise when it comes to human rights. Everyone deserves the same rights and protections, and if someone is trying to argue that people who have more melanin or aren't completely cis-het deserve fewer rights, there is no middle ground to be had.

Thankfully, I'm married and don't have to deal with this bullshit, but if I was dating these days, I would open with asking if they support my right to bodily autonomy and if their answer was anything besides "yes, absolutely", I'd get up and leave. Although, if I had to try to date these days, I'd probably just date women because I'm bi and men can be a coin toss on basic safety.

  • Oh, I forgot for OB/Gyn: GOOP and "Natural Birth Midwives"

    • Emergency Medicine: Alcohol and/or fireworks
    • Family Medicine: Wellness influencers
    • Surgery: Pre-op NSAIDs (eg ibuprofen)
    • Pediatrics: RFK Jr
  • The medical school application system, AMCAS, sells the information of every medical school applicant. I had to call the recruiters' office and explain to them that I have multiple failing organ systems and take more than 10 medications a day. I asked if they could get me a medical waiver for chronic kidney disease and they sheepishly agreed to remove my name from their list.
