  • I'm not sure if NYT is trying to soothe our anxieties or make us complacent.

I think the level of access to the president and unscrupulous/amoral actors in the administration is unrivaled and will lead to unprecedented outcomes.

IMO it's like predicting in January 2020 that the US would be unscathed from Covid because we have had +100 years without an extreme pandemic.

  • Biden: Grants clemency indiscriminately for 1,500 people Public: Why did you let the Cash for Kids woman free Biden: Commutes death sentences selectively Public: Who made you judge, jury and executioner?

  • Yes, I also agree that the president that commuted many death sentences is exactly the same as the president wanting to execute all of the prisoners

  • This meme seems reductive. Mandatory protection would also cover a single-payer health system.

There's a difference between protesting poor regulation of mandatory services (ie healthcare) vs a libertarian, "It's my right to die in a car crash because I don't want to wear a seatbelt"

  • With OpenAI's latest release, it's becoming apparent that AGI is looming and it would cause OpenAI to end its partnership w/ MSFT IIRC

  • I vote for GrapheneOS too for privacy reasons

  • More like the Overton Window at work actually.

Biden will likely end up as one of the top 5 most progressive presidents ever. Society expects more from Democrats than they would've previously. There's nothing wrong w/ that, but the argument being presented seems misguided and like both sides nihilism.

  • Is element on the main profile or are you waiting for notifications from secondary profiles? Also, might not be related, but my messaging notifications w/ GrapheneOS has gotten worse in the past week or so (Google Messaging hasn't always alerted to new messages until I open the app and it pulls them) so it might be a Graphene thing as well.

  • Not a huge fan of Biden's presidency, but it sounds like his commutations were based on whether society deemed them eligible for home release during covid. I'm assuming he didn't individually look at all 1,500 other commutations. Unless I'm reading it wrong, society deemed her low risk and she has been out of prison since 2021.

    Definitely sloppy tho.

  • Cannot recall. Just remember that texts/calls were impossible so I couldn't link up w/ people I was looking for.

  • RIP. Hope that his whistleblowing doesn't end up falling on deaf ears

  • If you are concerned about HDDs failing, I would try the nvme instead. For me, I have a 1tb external HDD connected to my server-laptop. It's definitely an eye-sore but my server is basically on the shelf out of the way and I SSH into the server 99% of the time unless it goes down.

The HDD is not blazingly fast by any means, but I stream jellyfin videos which is great. There is maybe a 1-2 second pause before a movie starts, but there are no noticeable buffering after, even @ 1.75 speed

  • If you have a spare laptop/phone, I'd find a good tutorial and start there and then venture towards new hardware as your needs require it. Personally, I bought a (used) laptop when my main laptop wouldn't boot, but then I wiped my malfunctioning laptop and it started working again. I've been using the used laptop as a server ever since.

Personally, I have yet to find something that I couldn't self-host on the laptop and still don't quite grasp why I'd need a heavier-powered device.

  • Nothing like some crowdsourced help to fine-tune the google search for your kink.

  • Same. I'm on Debian tho so I've got ~6 months until it affects me :D

  • IIRC, the music industry was in decline long before Spotify was made. The transition period before Spotify was just illegally downloading everything through Limewire/Kazaa/Napster etc.

Also, the reason podcasts make money is because they can produce something that brings audiences in on a weekly basis. The music industry OTOH has artists that make an album a year or less. It's not as sustainable and it's harder to sell ads against.

I don't think more segmentation is a wanted solution by consumers either. Consumers would much rather use one app for all platforms than have to buy a different streaming service every time they want to listen to a new album.

  • I can't speak to 5G but my Mint 4G service was non-existent when I was at a concert. It was otherwise great the other 99.99% of the time fwiw. Been a user for ~7 years

  • How does the duopoly have full control if Republicans have the majority in the House/Senate/Supreme Court?
