This account is being kept for the posterity, but it won't see further activity past February.

If you want to contact me, I'm at /u/lvxferre@mander.xyz

  • They're still providing the code for people who buy the compiled software. And they are not restricting their ability to redistribute that code. So it's still compliant with the GPL in the letter. However, if you redistribute it, they'll refuse to service you further versions of the software.

It's clearly a loophole because they can argue "ackshyually, we didn't restrict you, we just don't want further businesses with you, see ya sucker".

  • I think that the RHEL example is out-of-place, since IBM ("Red Hat") is clearly exploiting a loophole of the GNU Public License. Similar loopholes have been later addressed by e.g. the AGPL and the GPLv3, so I expect this one to be addressed too.

So perhaps, if the GPL is "not enough", the solution might be more GPL.

note that the license used by the kernel is GPLv2. Cue to Android (for all intents and purposes non-free software) using the kernel, but not the rest.

  • The first response seems reasonable for me; it's informative and replying to an ambiguous comment, as you can't quite know if "isn't there" refers to his individual needs or in general.

The second response is however passive aggressive garbage. Fl4ppers clarified that he was talking about his individual needs; notjustforhackers failed to take it into account, and his response sounds a lot like "I'm just sayin lol lmao... you liar".

  • "I'm a meowsician now".

  • 9:45, on the "universal social network": this can't be stressed enough.

No matter how much Musk babbles about "I wanr an errything app! lol lmao", Twitter won't become one. The Fediverse however has the potential to become an all-encompassing social network, with different aspects of online interaction being integrated organically.

There's a future not too far away where you can share a picture, from an account that you made for video sharing, that'll get a lot of microblogging toots and spark a discussion in a forum. This would be impossible using Instagram, Youtube, Twitter or Reddit; but once the interfaces get ironed out, it will become reality for PixelFed, Piped, Mastodon, Lemmy and Kbin.

  • Dough, freshly kneaded, still unshaped:

    Loaf, after baking:

  • Baking soda raises the pH. (Low pH = acid; high pH = alkaline. Yes, they're switched.)

Alkalinity catalyses caramelisation and the Maillard reaction, that's why meat gets to brown more. However in acid environment both processes happen mostly the same as if they were in a neutral environment, acidity doesn't really prevent this sort of browning. (I'm glad for this, otherwise my Sunday roast would be really sad. I often leave the pork marinading in lemon juice for a day, and it still browns just fine.)

  • Fun fact: strawberry was admitted to the psychiatric yard once pepper and cucumber joined the berry club.

  • Ghostery does work as an ad blocker too, and advertises eh itself as such.

Plus, for corporate nowadays, tracking and advertisement are two steps of the same process.

  • The ad blockers in question were AdGuard and Ghostery, acc. to the article.uBlock Origin is still working fine for me. And NewPipe in the cell phone.

  • That doesn't surprise me.

Linux users are biased towards higher technical expertise, and they have a different mindset - most of the software that we use is the result of collaborative projects, and we're often encouraged to help the devs out. And while the collaborative situation might not be true for game development, the mindset leaks out.

  • Socks. If I'm at home you'll never see me wearing socks, not even if it's -5°C out there. But got to use them while wearing shoes, I guess.

  • Brain plasticity, window of opportunity, it's all babble. You can learn new languages just fine as you age; the matter here is how much time you spend using the language.

The reason why adults perform generally worse than kids learning languages is mostly motivational, and not spending enough time with the language. But as an adult you got access to a bunch of resources that kids wouldn't, such as a decent grasp of grammar on theoretical grounds, that you can (and should) use to your advantage.

Note however that watching sitcoms will likely not be enough to get any decent grasp of any language. (Otherwise I'd be speaking Japanese, given the amount of anime that I watch.) You'll need proficiency on four levels: hearing, speaking, reading, writing.

  • Hard to say. Like, do "Ivan", "Giovanni" and "John" count as the same, or different names? What about Latin "Amanda" (to be loved) vs. Japanese 愛/Ai (love)? How do we even count this?

  • Don't cry because it ended, smile because it "hanepped". (The word is clearly supposed to be sucedió/happened, but the letters got switched).

  • The "Be the change that you want to see in the world" blue poster makes it extra funny.

...I never noticed that there was an emoji for yerba mate. It's now my favourite thing ever. 🧉

  • Yeah, he isn't multiplying booze like the OG Jesus was.

  • He's the modern Jesus.
