  • Not exactly IMO, as containers themselves can simultaneously access devices and filesystems from the host system natively (such as VAAPI devices used for hardware encoding & decoding) or even the docker socket to control the host system's Docker daemon.

They also can launch directly into a program you specify, bypassing any kind of init system requirement.

OC's suggestion of a chroot jail is the closest explanation I can think of too, if things were to be simplified

  • Themes and DEs inspired by Mac tend to have a very clear and consistent design language IME

Gnome also falls into the clear and consistent camp too.

    I value consistency a lot

  • I use certbot on only a single one of my oldest projects that has been going for almost a decade.

For everything else I use acme.sh because it works so well and integrates with a ton of DNS providers. The one time I had an issue, it was already fixed in a PR, so I just checked out that fixed version and used it for renewals until it was merged in.

  • Install iptraf on the machine that's being troublesome, to see if the ping traffic even registers on the interface

  • Nice. I've personally been using Linux on a Mid 2012, and the touchpad responsiveness + gesture support has been one of my favorite things about the experience.

Really nice to see gestures in general getting more support in the wider Linux dev community 👍

  • Someone else mentioned in a comment that the LLC behind Yuzu may file for bankruptcy to avoid paying Nintendo anything

  • And just like that, Nintendo have guaranteed to never get a dime of my money again 🏴‍☠️

What a greedy corpo. I'll be waiting on the MVG video covering all the legal details whenever that drops

  • If you're set to log in automatically, most distros will ask you for a wallet password when you log in, since it is used to unlock some encrypted storage that some apps store your user data inside.

The wallet would otherwise be unlocked when you enter your password in the greeter

  • On older Android devices vulnerable to Stagefright, malicious code will auto-run as soon as the MMS picture preview is loaded by the system notification shade, if I'm not mistaken

  • Was always possible to compile+run C# on Linux using the Mono project. Until Microsoft "bought them out" and created .NET Core, a cross platform version of .NET that MS now encourages people to use instead...

Microsoft's new linux compile tools rub me the wrong way slightly, with the telemetry that's opt-in by default.

Mono is still extremely valuable for older .NET Framework apps under WINE though, way easier to setup compared to the official installers from what i've experienced.

No idea how compiled C# compares to C...

  • About 150w total, trying to bring it down since electricity here is pretty expensive.

4 machines: two 4th gen i5, one 6th gen Nuc (Have two more but not set them up yet), and one HP thin client. Also two UPSes, and 3 cameras (previously four, but one was accidentally damaged).

Hosting Home Assistant, Zabbix, Palworld, SMB, Transmission, Plex and a bunch of other misc stuff.

Kind of contemplating moving everything to a 10th gen Nuc, but thinking a Ryzen based mini pc might be a better option

  • The more recent ones I've seen are pretty funny. It's usually two people with a relay kit: one carrying a massive flexible loop antenna, posing like a starfish walking around the front of the property, and the other beside the vehicle with a wireless keyfob emulator.

Sadly not so funny for the car owners though, AFAIK the vehicles usually end up being broken down into parts. In Canada it's a little different, they seem to be immediately driven to a port and loaded onto a ship for export.

I don't believe this is possible on older cars though, just ones with keyless start. Except if you have a US-spec Kia... where you literally just rip out the lock cylinder and use a USB cable to turn the engine start switch, although I believe they've fitted immobilizers to those now

  • They struck gold in the most horrible way possible: People dependent on their cars + their car keeps getting stolen = infinite money printing machine

  • Relay attacks don't need the key to be in close proximity, they can be read from almost anywhere in the house if they aren't in a faraday pouch or microwave. Have you seen the size of the antennas these attacks use?

  • I've seen some some other projects that scrape Spotify instead to get their curated playlists, then use Piped & Invidious instances to identify and stream the track file from YouTube

  • Would be a shame if a little "OVH incident" happened inside the servers hosting Piracy Shield.

Great job blocking your own schools and remote learning systems too, definitely setting a good example of what piracy prevention is all about.

(/s if it wasn't painfully obvious)

  • Might be worth reposting to !steamdeck@sopuli.xyz

I'm not sure if it's on topic for this community though, since mostly tech journalism articles are posted here

  • AFAIK their original mission was along the lines of making computers accessible at a low price point, particularly targeting the education sector in parts of the world where computers weren't very accessible or affordable. Comparable to the OLPC, but not on an individual basis

    I could be wrong though

  • A lot of the libcamera work done on Raspberry Pi boards is going towards improving the camera support on linux phones like the PinePhone, which is great!

Aside from that, sadly a lot of people (including myself) are kind of fed up with Raspberry Pi, after they essentially abandoned their mission during Covid to please corporations, and are preparing to go public despite being a "charity". Broadcom, their SoC supplier, also has left a sour taste in my mouth after their purchase and mass layoffs at VMWare.

If they created a phone it would likely end up being scalped to death, and maybe pretty pricey compared to a PinePhone
