  • Sodium is the future of batteries right now.

Projections from BNEF suggest that sodium-ion batteries could reach pack densities of nearly 150 watt-hours per kilogram by 2025. And some battery giants and automakers in China think the technology is already good enough for prime time. 1

+1 for them not exploding too.

  • yeah but think of what would be lost when the saying, "Don't make me turn this car around!" is never uttered again. The loss of decades of tradition... ;)

  • This is going to sound like a tangent, but I think car centricity holds a lot of blame for many societal issues.

150 years ago you would just walk wherever you needed to go 99% of the time. Now we drive 99% of the time. Most people don't have a strong community/village physically in the real world. This lack of interpersonal interaction leads to lack of empathy to some degree among society.

Lack of empathy makes it all about me and not society. That at least marginally contributes to income inequality among other issues.

We can improve society on a national, state and local level by advocating for pedestrian improvements. I would argue walkability of cities is one of the greatest issues of the 21st century, and historians will hopefully classify this century as one in which we realized our past errors and took steps to correct them.

  • why the hell doesn't he just declare bankruptcy and move on? That's what those laws are for.

  • Why are you on basic cable for network tv? It's broadcast over the air in HD for free.

  • There is PINE64 if you're looking for a SBC.

  • They can do that with a drivers license like they have for the last few decades.

And they're using a face recognition service from a for profit corporation ID.ME. Not ok. I'll continue to use their freefillable forms option, but if they discontinued that I'll just go back to paper mailing. This is not a step forward.

  • countries with no national ID cards and no plans for one: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK. 1

And they do taxes just fine without a Harry Potter like gif of every tax payer.

Privacy reasons aside, TurboTax doesn't require a video clip to file your taxes so this is only raising the technical barrier against the widespread adoption of a simple tax system.

  • I'm 100% for a simple IRS tax return but what the heck is with this?

To use Direct File, you need an IRS account with ID.me.

To get an ID.me account, you need to:

Take a video of your face

If you can't or don't want to take a video of your face, you can have a video call with an ID.me agent who will confirm that your face matches your identification.

    Is that really necessary???

  • Yes, I got them mixed up. It's EoP that I was referring to.

  • Ah yes, that is what I was thinking of, thought that was the same thing since it was power and Ethernet together.

  • PoE is terrible. I threw mine away and went to 802.11ac wireless and it was 10x faster. The problem is the circuit breakers, washing machines, or anything that generates EMI screw with the quality. Ethernet>wifi>PoE, at least for most use cases.

  • For mobile phones it's a good standard, but mfgs are putting them on desktop computers and laptop power plugs as primary power. That's just dumb, these things are all going to fail in 10 years of regular use where USB-A could easily hold up mechanically for 50. But it's suppose to be a data connector only. Combining things only makes devices less repairable. Broken USB-C jack? Well, better toss the laptop.

  • I thought image uploads were still disabled - guess they're back on now. And yeesh people are haters to have it at -20. I thought the pic was pretty funny, I'll resubmit with a direct link.

  • I see - thanks for taking the time to explain the backstory, very interesting.
